The Roadblocks to European Fintech Expansion

“The US market is vast. There are a lot of consumers in the US that use outdated technologies, and from that perspective we see huge potential here [in the US],” announced Nicolas Kopp, US CEO of N26, during a panel at Netguru’s Disruption Forum. Over the past few years, the fintech industry has started to prove that it can be a driving force to disrupt the financial services sector. Banks now have serious competition from tech-forward lending companies, transfer startups, personal finance and investment apps, and non-traditional banks. The majority of this activity has come from fintech companies in Europe.…

How the messaging app ‘bthere’ became a sexual assault prevention tool

May21
by Sindy Cator on May 21, 2019 at 2:52 pm
Posted In: Apps, Around the Web, Code Word

For the ongoing series, Code Word, we’re exploring if — and how — technology can protect individuals against sexual assault and harassment, and how it can help and support survivors. This story explores how the app bthere wants to combat and prevent sexual assault on college campuses using group messages and geolocation tracking. When it comes to preventing sexual assault, it’s clear we need to look for new ways to do so. New companies and projects are employing emerging technologies, like Callisto, which harnesses blockchain technology to store and record information and anonymize records. Another is bthere, a group messaging…

Game of Thrones’ Bronn becomes Master of VeganCoin cryptocurrency (we shit you not)

May21

Before you read this, beware there might be Game of Thrones spoilers in this piece. The actor that played one of the more Machiavellian characters in the HBO series, Game of Thrones, is joining the advisory board of a vegan lifestyle oriented cryptocurrency. Jerome Flynn, the actor that played “Bronn,” is joining an Israel-based cryptocurrency project called VeganNation, CoinDesk reports. The project plans to offer its own cryptocurrency token called VeganCoin. It seems appropriate given that Bronn was appointed as Master of Coin to Bran the Broken on the TV show’s finale earlier this week. According to the report, Flynn…

Google searches for how to cancel HBO spiked after Game of Thrones’ finale

BEWARE! If you haven’t finished Game of Thrones yet, there might be some spoilers in here. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Been on the internet recently? Then you’ll be aware that the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is all wrapped up. And you know who was happy with how one of the most popular and expensive series ever created ended? If social media is to be believed, no one. You might think HBO – the network that created the show – would be happy, but you’d be wrong. Yeah, the entire world is talking about the series, but it…

Dear NY Post, didn’t you learn anything about Bitcoin?

May21
by Sindy Cator on May 21, 2019 at 2:05 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, blockchain, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork

It’s that time of the year: NY Post’s in-house cryptocurrency pseudosopher John Crudele has published his annual diatribe against Bitcoin. For those new to Crudele, he is sort of like your local know-it-all who camps on a beer crate in front of the liquor store from dawn till dusk, smugly spewing nonsense to everyone who has the misfortune to step in the vicinity of his imaginary pedestal. He’s also a columnist for the NY Post, where he routinely embarrasses himself with his airheaded musings on cryptocurrency. Crudele has made a habit of voicing his belief (because, really, that’s all it…
