Hop, the app that turns your inbox into a series of multimedia IM chats to make email seem less of a chore, has today gained group conversations that can include pictures, links, documents, drawings, video and audio.       As with standard Hop conversations, you can add anyone – Hop user or not – and the conversation will stay in sync between them all. spotify_android_3
Big news for developers today: Spotify has announced a significant expansion to its Web API, while also revealing that it has been hard at work integrating with The Echo Nest following its acquisition of the music data platform back in March. With the latest version of the API, not only will third-party developers be able to include album art and music previews, but they’ll also be able to let their users create bone fide Spotify playlists directly within their own Web apps. With the new Web API, developers can: Retrieve extensive metadata, including track, album and artist details, as well…

Feat
Sitting in a packed auditorium at Edinburgh’s prestigious New Town Assembly Rooms back in May, The Next Web was among a slew of Scotland’s top tech startups, entrepreneurs, academics, and money-men to see what’s hot and what’s happening in the Scottish tech scene. The occasion? Engage Invest Exploit (EIE), an annual investor event designed to showcase the best companies emerging from Scotland’s universities, incubators and bedrooms. The main keynote of the day came courtesy of Sir Brian Souter, a name you may not hear all that much outside of Scotland, but you probably have used one of his products before….

Way back in 2012, social coding community GitHub launched its own icon font called Octicons, leveraging what it called at the time “CSS3 techniques like rounded corners, gradients, and @font-face across all pages of the site.” This was designed to be as much about aesthetics for the emerging retina-screened products as it was about site performance, and was used across many of GitHub’s sites, including its hackable text editor Atom. Now, GitHub has announced it’s making them available for anyone and everyone to download and use. You can read more about Octicons here. Octicons: Icon Font ➤ GitHub Octicons

linkedin
LinkedIn is extending its focus on China after it added Traditional Chinese to the list of languages supported on its service. The company launched its China-specific site — available at Lingying.com — in February. That initially only covered Simplified Chinese, so the addition of the Traditional Chinese — which is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, and by the overseas diaspora — is another step to gaining traction among business professionals in the mainland, particularly those with overseas connections and work. LinkedIn has five million registered users in mainland China, but its operations there were criticized earlier this month for censoring messages related to the 25th anniversary…
