US-NEW YEAR-2013
Every now and then, I’ll get a push notification from Line telling me about its latest sticker packs. Today, the messaging app pointed me to a free bundle based on PSY – best known for his internet sensation ‘Gangnam Style‘ – but the download method struck me as unusual. Rather than paying for the pack or downloading it immediately, Line is requiring users to watch PSY’s latest single – Hangover, featuring Snoop Dogg – over on YouTube first. You can press the back button almost immediately to get the stickers, but I suspect most people will sit through the music…

Glympse, the app that lets you share your location with friends in real-time, has been overhauled for Windows Phone 8 bringing new features to the platform. Among the new options is the ability to share your location with a friend via an international phone number and the ability to keep sharing your location even when the app is running in the background, which had been a significant limitation of the previous version. The company said it had also made it easier to launch a Glympse link in the app too, before, people that received a link could only view someone’s location…

Apple has introduced a new cheaper, less-powerful entry-level iMac today. The 21.5-inch machine sports a 1.4GHz (turbo boost up to 2.7GHZ) dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, and at $1,099 it costs $200 less than the 2.7GHZ model above it. New iMac Additionally, this base model only has a 500GB hard drive, compared to the 1TB of its cheaper predecessor. Meanwhile, the Cupertino company also dropped the price for its Apple TV set-top box, which now costs €99 (down from €109) in Europe and £79 (down from £99) in the UK. ➤ iMac | Apple Store

US-IT-CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW-CES
UK and US-based augmented reality company Blippar has snapped up its Dutch rival Layar for an undisclosed all-cash sum, the company confirmed today following rumors of the deal last week. According to Blippar’s CEO Ambarish Mitra, the acquisition is perfectly complementary and only took three to four months to complete. Blippar focuses on adding a layer of interactive content to the physical world, most often tied in with a brand’s marketing activities, so you might see it partner with Walker’s Crisps to bring you weather forecasts directly from the packet. More recently the company demonstrated its app running on Google Glass,…

blackberry
BlackBerry has just announced a deal that will see more than 200,000 Android apps made available for BlackBerry devices via the Amazon App Store when the new version of BlackBerry’s operating system arrives later in the year. According to BlackBerry, popular apps like Groupon and Netflix will be available for direct download from Amazon’s App Store, although BlackBerry 10.3 users will still obviously have access to the BlackBerry World app store too. Before now, some Android apps have been available to run on the BlackBerry 10 OS, but installing them wasn’t a simple process. Now, users will have a far simpler, and…
