Technorati quietly killed its once-authoritative blog ranking system in May

There was once a time when Technorati.com meant something to online publishers. It was their professional reputation, and featuring on it was the goal of many. Technorati hosts its own ranking system to determine the influence of websites, based on their subject matter and a range of factors, including in- and outgoing links, which establish authority and credibility. It is the place where you want your site to rank high, and we at The Next Web were among the many who once used it as an indicator. It’s notable, then, that Technorati actually quietly removed its ranking system — which was perhaps the best-known and most…

The BBC has been testing out new ways of distributing news recently and its most recent addition comes in the form of a dedicated Subreddit and video news channel on the site. Just a few months ago, the BBC launched Instafax, an experiment in short-form news delivered via Instagram. Now its attentions have turned to Reddit, which is hardly surprising given the huge number of visitors the site receives – last month alone it had around 113 million visits. The new Subreddit actually first made a quiet appearance a month ago, but the standalone video news channel was only announced by BBC News…

As promised, a new range of Google Glass frames and shades designed by Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) launched in the US today. If you head over to online fashion retailer Net-A-Porter, you can choose between five different frame combinations for $1,800. They’re all the same shape, but come in five different colors – Shiny Elderberry, Shiny Lagoon, Matte Java, Matte Ice and Shiny Ink – for a splash of style and personality. While the asking price might feel a little steep, it should be noted that each purchase comes with two frames. Net-a-Porter is bundling each model with a free set…

Opera’s Chromium-based Web browser is now available on Linux
