Facebook diversity report: “We have more work to do”

Facebook has released the results of its first diversity study, and the results are … not shocking. Measuring employee diversity in terms of gender and ethnicity, Facebook’s results appear typical of American technology companies today. Globally, males dominate at 69 percent of employees overall, and in the US, white males dominate at 57 percent, followed by 34 percent Asians. No other ethnic group came close. Facebook’s Maxine Williams, global head of diversity, wrote in the company blog, “As these numbers show, we have more work to do–a lot more. But the good news is that we’ve begun to make progress.”…

Google only just released its Android Wear SDK to developers today at I/O, but companies like PayPal, Soundwave, Pinterest, Eat24, Lyft and Allthecooks have already announced their first experiences for Android Wear. Android Wear apps aren’t quite full-blown apps, but Google’s new SDK allows code to run directly on the wearable device, opening up custom interfaces, sensor control, data transfer and other experiences beyond simple notifications. Ahead of actually getting a review unit for the new Samsung Gear Live, I was able to grab a few moments with the latest smartwatch from the electronics giant at Google I/O. Running Android Wear, the watch’s OS is still in its infancy, but the form factor is not only comfortable, it looks good. Here at Google I/O today, the company announced that the Moto 360 will be available later this summer, but we managed to find a Moto 360 on the conference floor and spent a few minutes with it. It’s as beautiful as it looked in the very first promotional shots; the screen on the 360 is stunning, bright and vibrant. It’s actually incredible to use in real life because it looks almost exactly like the promo shots which feels unreal. The circular design/interface makes it seem like something you might actually want to wear and the bulk isn’t as big as we thought it would be. Google rolls out ‘Material Design’ home screens for Docs, Sheets and Slides on the Web

Google’s trio of productivity tools – Docs, Sheets and Slides – are getting all-new home screens on the Web. Whereas before you needed to access them from Google Drive, the company will soon offer a portal for each app at google.com/docs, google.com/sheets and google.com/slides. The sites will use the modern Material Design language unveiled as part of Google’s new ‘L Developer Preview‘ for Android.
