Twitter has today announced that it is extending its ‘hashflags’ feature used for the World Cup for use during Ramadan – the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. For the duration of Ramadan, beginning this week, if you use a hashtag in front of the word Ramadan or Eid (in English or Arabic) special icons will appear to signify your support for the celebration, as shown below. To make things a little easier on people observing the fasting during the period, Twitter has also partnered with @AlArabiya so that they can find out what time the fast begins and ends each day. When Google unveiled its ‘L Developer Preview‘ for Android yesterday, it did so alongside a new “visual language” called Material Design. The vibrant aesthetic will be rolled out across all of Google’s platforms, including Chrome OS and the Web, creating a unified look that binds all of its products together. The flat design throws in splashes of bright color to reflect a lightweight, welcoming look. Animations have been tweaked to make the experience more playful, while ensuring the maximum amount of content is always visible. Over on Google+, the company has released some artwork for a printed kit given to…

Google has started removing ‘outdated’ entries from its search results under Europe’s recently introduced ‘right to be forgotten’ law. We knew the move was coming – last month Google launched an online form so people could lodge their removal requests with ease – but we weren’t sure exactly when it would begin removing the results. Nonetheless, according to The Wall Street Journal today, the search giant has already started the process of removal. TNW has independently confirmed that this is the case. In addition, a spokesperson for Google told TNW: This week, we’re starting to take action on the removals requests…

Opera has completely overhauled its Opera Mini browser for iOS. The new app now sports a flatter design with the use of transparency to visualize layers, finally fitting into the design language of iOS 7 (and also the recently-announced iOS 8). Opera Mini 8 now lets users choose from three different data-savings modes: Opera Mini, which boasts up to 90 percent compression of web traffic for particular use in areas with poor coverage; Opera Turbo, which saves less data than Opera Mini but offers better website compatibility; and of course the option to switch off data savings entirely, which is…
