In order to make money from its giant database of restaurants and other businesses, Foursquare is in negotiations to begin charging its largest clients for access to the information. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the check-in giant is looking for additional revenue streams. Foursquare COO Jeffrey Glueck told the newspaper that of the 63,000 companies that use the database, less than one percent will be charged the new fees that will be agreed on a one-on-one basis. Foursquare already has a similar deal with Microsoft. The software company pays Foursquare to access its database for Bing. Foursquare has 50 million users and nearly…

Facebook today announced new multi-product ads that let businesses include three of their products when placing desktop or mobile ads on the platform. Each product will get its own image, description and target. Here’s what the new ad unit looks like on the iPhone: The multi-product option is arriving first in Facebook’s ads API, but the company plans to bring it to its other offerings later this year. Facebook also added to its Custom Audiences settings to allow marketers to tailor audiences based on people that had visited certain Web pages and people that hadn’t visited in a while. Businesses…

At the Google I/O ATAP session this morning, ATAP Lead Regina Dugan told the assembled audience that is was going to “Glimpse at a small band of pirates trying to do epic shit.” Silicon Valley is full of hyperbole. It’s the world of “disruptive” apps and “game changing” services. Most are neither and when someone takes the stage and informs the audience that they will see something that’s actually awesome, it should be expected that skepticism is the first reaction. But unlike the average startup hoping to get acquired by the giants of the valley, the ATAP team actual delivered. All ATAP projects last for two…

500 Startups has partnered with equity crowdfunding platform SeedInvest to publicly raise funds for its $100 million third fund. SeedInvest will provide third-party verification for 500 Startups in order to ensure the fund adheres to Title II of the JOBS Act, which now allows for general solicitation, but only to accredited investors. Opening up to the public doesn’t mean that anyone can just pile on, though, as 500 Startups Founding Partner Dave McClure said in an interview that most investors will still be in the six-figure range and up. 500 Startups began raising money for Fund III last year. A…

These days it feels like everyone wants to store my photos. In fact, I’ve lost track of all the companies that have a copy of my photos on their servers. Being a tech journo type, I have both an iPhone and an Android device (a Nexus 5). Here are the apps that automatically backup my iPhone photos, or have copies of some (or all) of my photos: And these are the apps that automatically backup my Nexus 5 photos, or have copies of some (or all) of my photos: Meanwhile, when I switch on my MacBook Pro, this is what I see: Yes…
