Skype will no longer charge EU residents VAT for credit at the point-of-purchase

skype_android_3
Live in the European Union (EU)? Use Skype to call landlines or mobiles? Here’s some interesting payment news for you. In an email circulated to users earlier today, the Microsoft-owned company revealed that it’s bringing about some changes to the way it charges you VAT. Thus far, Skype has always charged those living in the EU and Switzerland 15 percent or 8 percent respectively, on top of the amount of credit they required. So, for example, a Brit wanting £10 worth of credit would actually pay £11.50. VAT at Point-of-Sale Starting from later this month, you’ll only pay for the…

Crowdwish: The startup that’s willing to dress up as a badger on your behalf

Wish
From the headline above, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Crowdwish might be some sort of elaborate BaaS (badgers-as-a-service) company, and if you came here with that somewhat unrealistic startup in mind, I apologize. Although, some of the blame probably lies on your shoulders, too. Rather than providing humans dressed as badgers on demand (you’re right, HDABaaS would be the correct acronym for any such service), Crowdwish is a global platform for, well, granting the most popular wish of its users each day. This might not sound all that novel, there are plenty of well established – and frankly huge –…

Google no longer accepts legacy-packaged Chrome apps, support to cease altogether by June 2015

Back in September last year, we reported on the launch of Google’s new Chrome Apps, as the internet giant sought to establish the Web browser as more of a platform within itself. While the new apps are similar to what the Chrome Web Store already offered, rather than appearing like a Web app, they now look and feel more like desktop apps, insofar as they have no address bar or navigation buttons. Moreover, Chrome Apps can work offline, can deliver desktop notifications, and they let you interact with your connected devices, via USB or Bluetooth. With that in mind, Google…

Samsung reveals the mini version of its Galaxy S5 smartphone, will go on sale in Russia first

Samsung has taken the wraps off the mini version of its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone. The 4.5-inch Galaxy S5 mini has pretty much the same features as its parent device, featuring IP67 certification for its display screen, an ultra power saving mode, a heart rate monitor, and a fingerprint scanner. However, in line with its reduced size, the Galaxy S5 mini does have a few downgraded specs. It is powered by a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM, as well as an eight-megapixel camera. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was unveiled back at Mobile World Congress in February, runs…
