Xiaomi will sell its first smartphone in India, the $250 Mi 3, on July 15

There’s been plenty of anticipation of Xiaomi’s arrival in India, and now the Chinese smartphone company has confirmed on its local website that its first device — the Mi 3 — will go on sale in the country on July 15. The phone will cost Rs 14,999 ($250) and will be sold using Xiaomi’s usual first-come-first-serve auction. At this point it isn’t clear how many devices will be made available to Indian customers but, given the specs of the impressive Mi 3 and the size of the population in the country, the phone could prove to be very popular. Netflix isn’t available in New Zealand, but this internet provider is giving customers access anyway

One enterprising internet provider in New Zealand is providing a ray of hope for film and TV fans worldwide who don’t yet have access to Netflix. That’s because Slingshot is letting its customers access the video streaming site from New Zealand even though the US company hasn’t launched there yet. GigaOm reports that Slingshot is using VPN (virtual private network) technology to give its customers access to Netflix and other sites using a US-based IP address, which fools them into thinking that they are on US soil. Samsung, Intel, Dell and others team up to help your gadgets talk to each other

There’s yet another tech industry group focused on the internet of things in town. Samsung has partnered with Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel and Intel-owned Wind River to launch the Open Interconnect Consortium, an organization aiming to create engineering standards to help electronic devices ‘talk’ to one another — e.g. controlling your Samsung fridge from an Intel-powered smartphone. Consumers can already control their smart (Nest) thermostat from their phone or message their LG washing machine, but the internet of things promises to make this kind of activity possible across any platform and using devices from different companies.
