Quotable

"Widespread apathy to the Grimsvotn Volcano eruption in Iceland is reflected by the Mild interest it raised in Google Trends. This demonstrates the weakness a story on the web if it does not include babes, cyberculture, or relationships. In other words, Iceland may regret that it is not led by a nefarious womanizer like Arnold Schwarzenegger." ~ Yasha Harari

Why the future of work is already here

Sean Kim is an entrepreneur, new-born writer, and striving life-hacker. This post originally appeared on the Sketchfab blog. It’s a beautiful afternoon as I write this post at the Dineen coffee shop in Toronto. I’m also instant messaging a co-worker in New York City, about to get on a Skype call with our Community Manager in the Netherlands, and sending an email to our development team in Paris. Some may think this isn’t an organized and efficient way to operate a growing company. To us, this is the future of work. Many of the greatest companies in the 21st century, including Virgin, 37signals, and IBM have…

Ritot: A smartwatch that projects notifications onto your hand is a crowdfunding hit

Ritot2
The ordinary concept of what a smartwatch is has been challenged by four guys in San Jose, who have been working a new device as part of a crowdfunding project that uniquely projects media onto the back of your hand. The Ritot appears to be very straightforward to use, with you being able to view the time by simply shaking your hand and a variety of notifications – including missed calls and new messages – by connecting the watch up to your smartphone. Included with the watch is a wireless battery panel that also doubles as an interface that lets…

Booze delivery service Minibar – not to be confused with another alcohol-related app of the same name – now lets Android-toting New Yorkers beckon booze to their home in less than an hour. The hitherto Web and iPhone-only app has been open to deliveries in Manhattan and Brooklyn since February, before opening shop for those living in the Hamptons and Brooklyn too. While it originally focused primarily on wine and spirits, it sensibly broadened its horizons to include beer, mixers and other associated items, including ice.     We’re told that since opening for beer delivery last month, its week-on-week sales…

How to make cold calling suck less

Anand Srinivasan is a digital media consultant and the author of the book “Cold Calling Success: Tricks & Strategies.” He also runs a newsletter for entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurship Daily. Regardless of whether you are the sales guy making the phone call or the prospect receiving them, we all hate cold calls. Yet, it is one of the most inevitable aspects of sales. During the course of writing my book, I was able to talk to business owners and sales managers with decades of cold calling experience to spell out some tricks that may be replicated by fellow sales executives. Here are some…

Wiper is a secure messaging app that permanently deletes your conversations with one click

Mobile messaging is the hot topic of this year — thanks to a few big acquisitions — but what can help a contender from standing out from the rest of the field? How about a privacy button that permanently removes all traces of a conversation with a single click? That’s the formula behind Wiper, a new messaging app for iOS and Android that takes the simple aesthetics of WhatsApp and Telegram and adds a button that, quite literally, wipes messages from the sender’s phone, recipient’s phone and the company’s own servers in seconds. “Whether it’s WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook, Google or email providers, we’ve found…
