dropbox
Dropbox has announced a number of product updates aimed at its small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) customers, including a much-requested option for full-text search within documents. Announced today, the update brings a number of new features to the platform for business users, including an option for setting passwords and/or an expiration date for shared links, which the company says further enhances the security for teams working on collaborative projects and frequently sharing documents. This also works retrospectively if you update previously shared documents with an expiration date or password. The minimum period for expiration dates is one day (rather than…

FiftyThree_Pencil_Drawing_1-798x310
FiftyThree wants to make Pencil, its stylish Bluetooth Low Energy stylus for the iPad, more useful. Some of its best features, such as Palm Rejection, Erase and Blend, only work with the official Paper app – but now, a FiftyThree SDK is available so that developers can implement these same features in their own apps. To coincide with the release, FiftyThree has teamed up with three launch partners. Procreate, a digital art and illustration app that won an Apple Design Award last year, has combined core Pencil features – Paint, Smudge and Erase – into a new creative tool for…

Premium not freemium: Fleksy follows in SwiftKey’s footsteps with a new store for themes

Fleksy 3.0 - Ocean Blue
Fleksy’s regular Android updates continues today with the news that the smart keyboard app is getting a general design refresh alongside a brand new Fleksy Store for premium content. This move mimics a similar shift in focus by SwiftKey back in June, when it too launched a store for premium themes. Except with SwiftKey, it also ditched its hitherto paid app to go completely free, thus relying entirely on in-app purchases to generate revenue through its flagship Android app. In Fleksy’s case, however, it shall continue to adopt its usual 30-day trial period, followed by a mandatory $3.99 upgrade if…

LYTRO-ILLUM_Right-Orthos-798x310
500px is one of the most respected photo-sharing sites on the Web and to further emphasize its commitment to the art form, the company is supporting images shot with Lytro‘s unusual light-field cameras. For those who need a primer, Lytro cameras are fitted with a unique sensor that captures numerous characteristics of light rays, including their color, intensity and direction. The result is a photo that feels 3D; viewers can drag their cursor to shift the perspective, or click to manually set the focal point. It’s hardly the holodeck, but light-field photography is already gaining momentum. Last month, Lytro open-sourced the…

Maps & Navigation
Alohar Mobile, the location startup led by ex-Google Maps architect Sam Liang, today launched a new iPhone app called PlaceUs that tries to add contextual intelligence to location sharing. PlaceUs aims to help people stay connected with a close circle of loved ones. As the app learns your routines, it can do things like automatically send a message to your spouse when you head home from work or when you’re stuck in traffic on the way to daycare. PlaceUs can also notice if you haven’t been to the gym in a while and send you a reminder. Alohar claims that PlaceUs…
