With the release of OS X Yosemite fast-approaching, it’s hardly surprising that Apple has decided to give its MacBook Pro with Retina display lineup a quick refresh. On the outside Apple’s laptops look exactly the same, but under-the-hood specs have been bumped up across the board. The 13-inch model starts at $1,299 and now comes with a 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 chip and 8GB of memory. An extra $200 will increase the flash storage from 128GB to 256GB, while a further $300 adds a beefier 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 chip into the mix. The entry-level 15-inch MacBook Pro…

If you’re a movie buff with a PlayStation 4, listen up. Sony is rolling out a system update for the console that adds a long-awaited feature: 3D Blu-ray support. Admittedly, 3D televisions have never taken off. The industry thought it would be the next big driver for TV upgrades after high-definition, but it seems all eyes are turning to 4K now. Nevertheless, 3D movies are still prevalent in theaters – it adds to the spectacle and is an easy way to charge a few extra bucks – so the technology has wriggled its way into the home cinema scene too. Earlier…

UK-police

If you’re in the UK and access a website that offers pirated content, don’t be surprised to see a pop-up banner warning you that the site is under investigation and advising you to close the browser. The intellectual property crime unit (PIPCU), run by the City of London Police, has started replacing paid-for ads on these copyright-infringing websites with such warning banners, in a bid to disrupt a source of revenue that these sites typically rely on. The head of PIPCU, Andy Fyfe, says in a statement that this will also help consumers: “When adverts from well known brands appear on illegal…

Windows Phone’s Cortana now pulls in Foursquare data to suggest nearby places for you

Microsoft’s deal with Foursquare is now yielding more benefits as Cortana, the personal assistant for Windows Phone that Microsoft developed to rival Apple’s Siri and Google Now, has now integrated data from the location-based platform. As can be seen on the screenshot provided by a Reddit user (and spotted by Neowin), Cortana is able to pull in data from Foursquare according to what places are near you, or your specified preferences. Microsoft became a Foursquare investor after it pumped in $15 million to become the startup’s biggest source of revenue back in February, while inking an agreement to use its valuable data in products…
