Quotable

"Obama's first televised address to the nation from the Oval Office proved one thing: He is fundamentally transforming America, into a nation of polluted waters and lands, political name calling, and a clear plan to fail everybody, except the enemies of America. And yes, I do believe he loves America. I just think he's a hyphenated-American. To be specific, when it comes to his politics, I believe he's what is known as an idiotic-American." ~ Yasha Harari

Microsoft denies Windows 8.1 Update 2 rumors, sticks to Patch Tuesday schedule with next updates on August 12

Microsoft today denied all the rumors and speculation surrounding a supposed Windows 8.1 Update 2 release. Instead, the company says it will stick with its existing monthly update process “to deliver more frequent improvements along with the security updates” that it normally provides on Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of every month when the company releases software updates). After the release of Windows 8.1 Update in April, many sources pointed to a second update coming later this summer. While the company has indeed been working on improvements, the decision came to simply push smaller, more frequent updates, “rather than waiting…

Smartwatch maker Pebble has announced a set of limited edition neon-colored green, blue and pink watches. The new designs, which are based on the classic Pebble hardware, cost the usual $150 and will only see one production run. Pebble has named the colors “Fresh Green,” “Hot Pink” and “Fly Blue” and included matching bands. All three models will call plenty of attention to your wrist, but young folks should have some fun with the retro vibe, which appears to be inspired by Swatch. It’s definitely a drastic departure from the professional look of the Pebble Steel. Previously, the company took a vote on two…

Sony quits selling e-readers

Sony has announced it’s to give up selling e-readers due to failing to compete within a crowded market. This follows the company’s decision earlier this year to stop selling e-books to customers, directing them to competing service Kobo. Today’s announcement means the Sony PRS-T3 has become its last e-reader model to be made. You can’t help but notice that as Sony quits the industry, Amazon’s Kindle remains on top with a 90 per cent market share. ➤ Sony gives up on selling e-readers [BBC, via Lesen]

Gmail gets support for addresses with accented or non-Latin characters, Google Calendar to follow ‘shortly’

Google today added support for addresses that contain accented or non-Latin characters in Gmail, and promised that Google Calendar will get the same treatment “shortly.” This means Gmail users can send emails to, and receive emails from, people who have these characters in their email addresses. Google also plans to make it possible for its users to use these characters to create Gmail accounts, but wouldn’t say when that would happen aside from “in the future.” The company appears to be slowly adopting the standard created by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in February 2012 to see how the rest…
