This game reveals the hidden racial bias of dating app algorithms

It should be no surprise that racial bias factors into swiping matches on dating apps, like Tinder — but algorithms used by these apps may also reinforce prejudice. This is why developer, Ben Berman, and designer, Miguel Perez created MonsterMatch, a game that simulates a dating app while exposing the inherent bias that fuels its matching algorithms. I created, Ian, a blue monster with questionable hair and it didn’t take long to match with Octiana, a Disney enthusiast, who…

Congressional report: Bitcoin adoption ‘miniscule’ compared to traditional finance

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! I love headphones. I also love noise-canceling headphones. And, in particular, I love Sennheiser noise-canceling headphones. But, most of all, I love a big fat discount on a pair of the Sennheiser PXC 550 noise-canceling headphones. You read that right, currently you can get 34 percent (specifically, $119.98) off a pair of the cans. That means you can get your very own set of Sennheiser PXC 550 for only $229.97. Victory! So, what sweet features do the Sennheiser PXC 550 headphones have? First off, they’re wireless. Using…

Elon Musk makes it easy to dismiss his grandiose — unhinged, even — descriptions of his product plans. But if we look past the hyperbole, we see a serious threat for legacy automakers who don’t know and love software. “I feel very confident predicting 1 million autonomous robo-taxis for Tesla next year,” When Elon Musk utters these words at Tesla’s Autonomy Day late April, a song plays inside my head: They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!. I imagine two burly men in white coats coming on stage, wrapping Elon in a tight jacket, and whisking him to a padded cell. (I last heard the song in the late…
