BRITAIN-TECHNOLOGY-WIKIMANIA-CONFERENCE

After publishing its first-ever transparency report, the Wikimedia Foundation has issued fresh criticism over the controversial ‘right to be forgotten‘ ruling introduced by the European Union Court of Justice (ECJ) earlier this year. The Foundation said the ECJ’s decision was now “undermining the world’s ability to freely access accurate and verifiable records” online. Lila Tretikov, Executive Director for the Wikimedia Foundation, added that the ruling was also having a “direct” and “critical” impact on Wikipedia. Google has already received over 91,000 removal requests since the ‘right to be forgotten’ ruling came into effect. As of July 18, the Wikimedia Foundation…

Chat app Line is investing $100 million to create social games for your smartphone

Line, the chat app company closing in on 500 million registered users, is doubling down on gaming after announcing a 10 billion yen ($97 million) fund for developers who produce titles for its social games platform. It has also bought a 10 percent stake in fast-growing Japanese games publisher Gumi. Games account for more than half of Line’s revenue, but the lion’s share of that is generated by users in Japan. The new fund will launch in September with the aim of growing the games platform (and its revenues) worldwide. US rival Tango launched a smaller $25 million fund for its Asia-inspired games platform last month. The 40 games on Line’s platform have racked…

Sony drops support for PlayStation Mobile gaming service on newer versions of Android

Sony Japan has confirmed that the company will no longer be supporting its PlayStation Mobile for Android service. Instead, it’s encouraging any developers building games for the platform to transition across to creating content for the PlayStation Vita and Vita TV. There’s a good chance you might not have been aware that Sony’s PlayStation Mobile for Android service even existed, which is really part of the reason that the long-running attempt to get indie devs building mini-games for specifically certified mobile devices is now being abandoned. For PlayStation Certified devices running Android 4.4.2 and lower, all your content should still work just…

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales speaks dur

The Wikimedia Foundation today released its first transparency report, giving a crucial first glimpse at the volume of government requests it receives for user data, content alterations and takedowns. Between June 2012 and June 2014, the Foundation received 56 requests for information about its users. Of these, the Foundation categorised 43 as “informal,” or submissions that didn’t involve a formal legal process. “For example, this would include a situation where a government sends us a letter or an email requesting nonpublic information about one of our users,” the Foundation explains. To break this figure down further; 15 requests were from…

Redmi-1

Popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has just introduced 4G support in China for one of its budget devices, the Redmi Note phablet. This comes as Xiaomi has much to catch up in terms of 4G as more customers demand support for the speedier network — it only finally solidified 4G plans with the announcement of its new flagship smartphone, the Mi 4. In a Weibo post today, Xiaomi revealed that the Redmi Note with 4G support is lighter than its predecessor by 10 grams, comes with a 5.5-inch screen, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.6GHz processor and…
