Chromebooks are expected to reach 5.2 million units in 2014, a 79 percent increase from 2013, according to Gartner. While the growth is certainly notable, the overall figures aren’t impressive just yet. The sales shouldn’t be too surprising, as more and more vendors are launching Chromebooks (in fact, Acer today unveiled the first to sport Nvidia’s Tegra K1 processor). Yet Chromebooks are still mainly an education sector affair. Gartner estimates nearly 85 percent of Chromebook sales in 2013 were sold to schools, with 82 percent overall being sold in North America. Samsung and Acer were the first vendors to sell…

Square is no longer satisfied with just having businesses use its Square Reader to process credit card transactions. Now it wants to help businesses offer online appointment scheduling as it moves to position itself as the one-stop-shop for all small business needs. Announced today, Square Appointments adds online scheduling to Square’s suite of offerings. Businesses can add an Appointments widget to their site or email signature to prompt customers to schedule appointments online. For businesses like hair salons, tattoo parlors, and accountants that rely on appointments, this is low-friction way to access customers accustomed to making all appointments online. Square does stress that this is…

In a bid to keep costs and the final retail price as low as possible, Chromebooks are usually lacking in one of a few key areas: display, power or industrial design. Acer hopes to nail all three with the Chromebook 13, the first Chrome OS laptop with an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor. The hope is that this particular chipset will be both powerful and power-efficient; Acer is promising up to 13 hours on a single charge, which should keep you running for most of the day. To hit this particular milestone, you’ll need to opt for the cheaper ($279) 1,366 x…

OpenTable has been gently testing ways to integrate its reservation service more deeply with users’ dining experiences by including in-app payment of checks for more than a year already, and following the launch of a pilot program in San Francisco, it’s now slowly expanding the feature to new cities in the US. Announced today in a blog post, the feature is now available to users in New York City, and for everyone outside of San Francisco or NYC, mobile payments will be introduced in 20 additional cities before the end of the year. Of course, you’ll still need to find a participating restaurant,…
