Digg founder Kevin Rose is preparing to launch a new mobile startup

Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose said earlier this year at TNW Europe that he wanted to have another go at building a startup, and now, just a few months later, he’s ready to be an entrepreneur again. TechCrunch reports that Rose is scaling back from his Google Ventures role in order to launch North, a mobile development studio that will rely on lean teams of three to test the market with new apps. The concept is fairly similar to his original idea for Milk, which launched the Oink app and then quickly sold to Google. According to the report, North…

Aaron Hall is the Associate Director of Naming at Siegel+Gale. While naming your new tech product or company can be a lot of fun, it certainly isn’t easy. When approaching naming for the first or tenth time, there are some common pitfalls and traps in which companies tend to get caught. While it isn’t practical (or possible) to address every naming pitfall in a single article, there are a few easy ones to avoid when you jump into your next tech-naming project. 1. Exact dot-coms are hard to get. Get over it. Everyone seems to want the elusive exact dot-com…

BBM for Windows Phone comes out of beta

BlackBerry today released BBM for Windows Phone, finally removing the beta tag. You can download the app now directly from the Windows Phone Store. The company explains that the version 1.01 release fixes a number of bugs and makes performance improvements “that we caught during the beta phase.” One thing you can expect is a shorter app loading time. BBM for Windows Phone was first released as beta in July to all Windows Phone 8 users. The beta phase thus didn’t last very long, probably because there weren’t very many bugs, or testers. EyeEm today announced the acquisition of Sight.io, a company building computer vision technology for ranking photos based on how beautiful they are. Sight.io didn’t go into specifics on what the team will work on at EyeEm, but it did promise that “a lot of the core principles and technology built over the past few years at Sight.io will make an appearance on EyeEm.” EyeEm recently launched redesigns of its iOS and Android apps with a new interface that places greater focus on your photos. ➤ Sight.io Thumbnail image credit: Alexander Klein / AFP / Getty Images

Running late? Glympse now lets you share your location from a Pebble smartwatch

Glympse, an app that lets you share your current location with specific people over a pre-determined period of time, is now supported on the Pebble smartwatch. Android and iOS users with the Glympse app can now bring up and share their whereabouts from their wrist. The implementation also supports messages and, if you’re running late, you can extend the sharing period in 15 minute chunks. As before, recipients don’t need the app to access your location; the live map can be accessed through any browser. It’s a nice touch that avoids the age-old problem of persuading friends to download yet…
