Barcelona Cabs Strike Against Uber Taxi App

Car-hailing service Uber has been banned from operating its services anywhere in Germany, according to German newspaper Der Spiegel today. The report says that a Frankfurt court has blocked Uber from operating as it does not hold the necessary paperwork for carrying out a taxi service in the country – an official permit under the Passenger Transport Act is required. The decision follows a temporary injunction in Berlin that lifted four days after being issued. As was the case in Berlin, Uber is free to appeal the court’s decision, but the ramifications are more serious this time around as the ban applies…

Opera’s desktop browser now boasts over 1,000 extensions and comes with a tab preview feature

A new version of Opera’s browser for Mac, Windows and Linux has landed with a useful tab preview feature. This lets users see a large preview of a webpage by hovering the mouse over a tab, in the form of the most recent snapshot of the site. Opera 24 also comes with user interface improvements — Windows users with very dense displays can now get a sharper-looking UI (instead of the display being scaled), which the company says is “similar to what Opera for Mac users get on Retina screens.” In line with the release of Opera 24, the company…

YouTube’s new fan funding feature lets you donate to your favorite channel owners

YouTube is strongly rumored to be launching a subscription-based music service soon, but the Google-owned video site has quietly introduced a new (and far lower-key) payment service that lets viewers send donations to YouTube channel owners. First noticed by the astute folks at Android Police, the fan funding feature in initially available in four countries: the US, Australia, Japan, and Mexico. If you live in any of these places, then you may notice the below pop up appear inside Youtube.com or the service’s mobile apps if the channel owner has turned it on. A ‘tips jar’ is not going to replace revenue from advertising, but YouTubers…
