Every weekend, football fans travel across the country to see if their favorite team can pick up some points away from home. To make the trek just a little easier, the Barclays Premier League has launched an Away Days app with everything you need to know. Once you’ve selected a team you’ll get a vertical list of upcoming fixtures. Tapping each one will display a dashboard with all sorts of useful information; when and how to buy tickets, the best route for finding the stadium, exclusive offers and discounts, and some history about the grounds. One of the best features is the…

Rakuten announced the much-rumored acquisition of US e-commerce company Ebates, which operates a number of shopping sites, for $1 billion this week, but it is far from done with efforts to expand in North America. The Japanese company has acquired smaller rivals in Western markets in the past — including Buy.com for $250 million in 2010, and Europe-based Play.com for $39 million in 2011 — and although its outlay on Ebates is far higher, it is one that the company actually sees as a bargain. “A billion-dollar deal is very strategic and smart in this case,” Yaz Iida, executive VP of Rakuten USA and senior executive officer…

all4feat

British television broadcaster Channel 4 will rebrand its on-demand television streaming service, 4oD, as “All 4″ early next year. The new name will also be used to launch a revamped service that splits content into three areas: On Demand, Now and On Soon. These three tabs will be displayed prominently at the top of each app or webpage, giving users faster access to Channel 4’s past programming, live channels and upcoming shows. On Demand, as the name suggests, will house all of Channel 4’s catch-up content. Although it will be primarily for TV shows, the broadcaster plans to bolster the…

Viber, the mobile messaging app bought by Japan’s e-commerce giant Rakuten for $900 million, is spreading its wings beyond voice calling on mobile after it introduced video calling to its Android and iOS apps.
