Well, iOS 8 is here and, assuming you can get through to the servers and free up enough space on your device, you’ll have a shiny, new operating system to play with. But, a last-minute hiccup has prompted Apple to remove third-party apps from its App Store that had enabled day-one HealthKit support. MyFitnessPal, which just announced miCoach support, has removed its latest update from the store and is working with Apple to resubmit a new version without HealthKit functionality. CARROT Fit’s HealthKit update has also been pulled from the App Store. MacRumors reports that developer Brian Mueller posted on Twitter…

In a short blog post, Easel has announced it is shutting down. New signups have been halted, and the service will no longer be available on October 31, 2014. GitHub bought Easel in January 2014, its second acquisition after Ordered List back in 2011. The Y Combinator graduate offered a browser-based visual tool for designing and prototyping. At the time, Easel was expected to continue working, though there were no details regarding potential integration with GitHub. The company explained that paying customers would be able to keep using the service, while also enjoying customer and service support. Now, Easel says…

lecture

Coursera today announced it is officially launching in Brazil. The company is teaming up with the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), its first university partners in Latin America to offer Portuguese courses. That’s not the only first. Coursera is the first open online education provider to partner with Brazil’s top universities. Furthermore, the move today also means it is offering its first native Portuguese courses for learners not just in Brazil, but across the globe. The two universities will develop courses targeted at Brazilian learners in high-demand topics from entrepreneurship to finance, slated for…

Storehouse has shrunk down its iPad app for creating beautiful photo and video stories with the release of an iPhone app. Storehouse launched at the start of this year to high praise for its design. Given that Storehouse co-founder Mark Kawano served as a UI designer for a number of Apple’s photo-centric apps, the level of polish was to be expected. We’ve been testing the beta version of Storehouse for iPhone, and it lives up to the same standards. With the smaller real estate, the new app works best for short, simple posts. It’s not really designed for creating the…

hero

Apple today put its hotly anticipated iOS 8 mobile operating system into the hands of its toughest critics: the users, and iPhoneographers particularly have been champing at the bit to discover how it all works on the camera that’s always in their pockets. Photographers and videographers have two main points of entry within the mobile operating system: the Camera app and the Photos app, with iCloud increasingly playing a dominant role. Here’s the lowdown on updates — both major and minor — that will become obvious the minute you upgrade your iPhone’s OS. While Apple has already offered plenty of details about photography improvements in the…
