In the wake of security issues following the iCloud celebrity ‘hacking’ scandal, Apple is placing greater emphasis on user security after releasing an open letter from CEO Tim Cook and a new set of webpages that are devoted to explaining its privacy policy. Amazon today announced two models for its Fire tablet line that take affordability to a whole new level. The Fire HD 6 costs $99, while a 7-inch model starts at $139. To put that into perspective, Amazon’s entry-level color tablets now cost roughly as much as the Paperwhite e-reader. Pre-orders for the new devices begin tonight ahead of an October ship date. Amazon today announced the all-new Fire HDX 8.9, an upgrade to its current HDX tablet, adding a 2.5 GHz processor while sporting a lighter body and 802.11ac support for faster Wi-Fi connectivity. The new Amazon Fire HDX is now equipped with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor and enhanced display that offers 339 pixels per inch in sRGB color. It is also Amazon’s first tablet with Dolby Atmos for better sound quality, and an 8 MP rear camera that can shoot 1080p HD videos. Amazon today announced its latest high-end e-reader, the Kindle Voyage, which features a 7.6mm thin magnesium body, 39 percent brighter screen and new control panels at the bezel with haptic feedback. The Kindle Voyage sports a new design that has the same, matte look with the addition of a glossy bar across the top of the back. The Voyage weighs in at just 6.4 ounces, and delivers 300 pixels per inch with Amazon’s Paperwhite display. New to the Voyage’s design are “PagePress” sensors located at both sides of the screen. Google co-founder Sergey Brin may be in charge of the company’s X moonshot research division, but that hasn’t stopped CEO Larry Page from also pursuing some high-flying ideas of his own. According to a report from The Information, Page has expressed interest in building a more efficient airport and a model city. Writer Amir Efrati noted that Page pulled together his top lieutenants last year to envision what “Google 2.0” would look like and set new goals for the firm.
