Google Chrome's logo is seen at Google's

Google today updated its Chrome Apps for Mobile project with new Chrome APIs for identity, Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) support, and rich notifications. At the same time, the company has improved the developer workflow and added modern WebView capabilities for older versions of Android. Chromium WebView, which was introduced as part of Android 4.4 KitKat, is now available on any device running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher. This can be done by bundling your Chrome App with an embeddable Chromium WebView, thanks to the Crosswalk open source project. To show off this new functionality, Google ported the Topeka…

Google today revealed details behind a new search feature called Structured Snippets that displays information pulled from data tables on webpages. The feature actually began rolling out last month, but the company’s research team explained the technology in a post today. The search engine has been progressively adding new information through its Knowledge Graph database. This latest feature adds more data below the snippets of text in a search query. For instance, searching for a Nikon camera model shows tech specs like sensor resolution and weight: Google is using machine learning to separate tables with useful information from those used for formatting. The system…

All the companies are slowly rolling out updates to their iOS apps, and today it’s Google’s turn with Chrome for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. In addition to the usual bug fixes, Chrome has now been optimized for iOS 8 and has introduced support for additional services via app extensions. This means that you’ll now be able to share content directly from the browser into more third-party apps you have installed.     The refreshed Chrome app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is available to download from the App Store now. ➤ Chrome [iOS]

Otter Media, a joint venture between AT&T and the Chernin Group, today announced it had completed its purchase of a majority stake in the popular YouTube network, Fullscreeen. The network involves over 50,000 creators with 450 million subscribers, making it one of the largest collections of YouTube channels around. Together they generate around 4 billion monthly views. Founder and CEO George Strompolos remains at the helm of the company, and the deal is expected to complete next month. The move follows Disney’s purchase of Maker Studios earlier this year, which kicked off current investor interest in acquiring YouTube networks. As the video giant continues to…

US-IT-INTERNET-SOFTWARE-MICROSOFT

Microsoft has announced a new self-serve program for students at eligible schools that allows them to sign up for a free Office 365 license on their own. The offer is available first in the US and will roll out globally later this year. The new program builds on the Student Advantage initiative that launched last year. Previously, schools had to go through several steps in order to approve free Office subscriptions, but now students can sign up online using their school email address. In order to qualify, students need to be attending campuses that have purchased an organization-wide Volume Licensing…
