Windows Phone is still struggling against Android and iOS. But there is some good news: Version 8.1 of the mobile operating system has gained some significant traction among users. According to Microsoft, Windows Phone 8.1 has become, “the primary download OS version for Windows Phone apps in September.” With Windows Phone 7.x garnered less than five percent of all apps downloaded in September. The company also noted that customers using Windows 8.1 represent around 70 percent of Windows Store downloads. Twitter Flight, the company’s first ever mobile developer conference, is coming up next month, and now you can check out the schedule for the event. CEO Dick Costolo will kick off the mobile festivities on October 22 with a keynote announcing new products for developers. The first two technical sessions will center on new features announced at Flight, followed by sessions on Crashlytics, how to grow your app downloads, and improving monetization with MoPub. Developers can also stop by Product Pods after lunch to meet with engineers and visit the Lightning Theater for shorter talks on Twitter data, open source and scalability….

Apple releases Bash security flaw patch for OS X

Apple just released updates to squelch the bash UNIX shell exploit. The updates close a security hole that allowed hackers to remotely take over a computer using SSH (Secure Shell, a networking protocol). The exploit does require that a computer be available on the internet (like a web server) so most users are not in immediate danger of having their computers hijacked. The exploit is also know by the name Shellshock. Probably because it uses shell access and it sounds more dangerous that bash exploit. Bash is a UNIX command shell built into OS X as well as other UNIX based…

Show Focus Points for Lightroom is a handy plug-in for image focus analysis

It may not have occurred to you to double-check which focus points were used when you shot a photo with your DSLR, but the recent Show Focus Points plug-in for Lightroom makes such an inquiry somewhat fascinating. Show Focus Points, still in beta, is free for both Mac and Windows versions of Lightroom 5 and works with images shot with almost any Canon EOS or Nikon DSLR. A version for Lightroom 4 is in the works, as reported in the Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips blog. Apple’s Aperture also has a similar feature, but the new Lightroom plug-in offers a lot more explanatory detail…
