While the technology world and the US political institution grapple with how to deal with incumbent gender discrimination, Hollywood’s seemingly gotten a pass on the matter. But a new study out of London indicates Tinsel Town may be just as bad as Silicon Valley and the US Senate. Researchers from Queen Mary University recently developed an AI model to scour the profiles of more than two million actors and actresses on IMDB. The goal was to see if they could teach a machine to predict when an entertainer would have their best year. They achieved success in that respect; the…

HTC’s launches Vive Pro Eye in North America at a massive discount

HTC today launched its latest and greatest virtual reality headset, the Vive Pro Eye, to the North American market. The new device features Tobii eye-tracking, which gives the headset two keen features: users can navigate menus just by looking at things, and foveated rendering. Navigating menus, selecting items, or even triggering animations by making eye contact with on-screen characters sounds pretty cool, but foveated rendering is a game-changer.   Essentially, foveated rendering is a technique that allows the headset to render graphics the same way the human eye sees the real world. Google today revealed more information about Stadia, its ambitious gaming service, in a special Connect show. We learned that Google was tossing away their one single advantage — namely, that you’re going to have to purchase a $129 not-console in order to play it at launch. The first details we learned was the launch library of Stadia — and the first title we learned about was the previously-rumored Baldur’s Gate III and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. The other titles in the lineup include Doom, Destiny 2, The Division 2, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and the Tomb Raider reboot games. Google of course hyped its Stadia controller, but specified that it could…

Xiaomi’s itsy-bitsy Mi 9 SE flagship is designed to be used with one hand

Xiaomi’s assault on the European smartphone market continues. Today, it announced the UK launch of its compact Mi 9 SE flagship, which will retail starting at £349 (roughly $440) for the entry-level model. This device bears many similarities with the previously released Mi 9 handset, albeit with a drastically modified form factor. It sits in the space previously occupied by devices like the iPhone SE, which has largely been ignored as manufacturers embrace bigger phablet-style form factors. Another key difference: It comes with recently-released Qualcomm Snapgragon 712 platform, rather than the more powerful Snapdragon 855 CPU which ships with the…
