Amazon has today released its Fire TV streaming device in the UK, following a period of pre-orders. The multi-faceted Web giant revealed it would be bringing the Fire TV – which allows users to stream TV and film content, as well as play games via a special Amazon Fire Game Controller – to its first markets outside the US in early September. Google teams up with Oxford University to advance artificial intelligence research

Google has joined forces with the University of Oxford in the UK in order to better study the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the areas of image recognition and natural language processing. The hope is that by joining forces with an esteemed academic institution, the research will progress more rapidly than going it alone for its DeepMind project. In total, Google has hired seven individuals (who also happen to be world experts in deep learning for natural language understanding), three of which will remain as professors holding joint appointments at Oxford University. If you’re looking for a super simple way of receiving Android notifications on your desktop, you may wish to check out a new app called PPLNotify. How it works When you first launch the app, you’ll be asked to enter your email address and then hit ‘Create Account’. I’m not entirely clear why an email address is required here, as you can basically enter any random word@domain.com email (even one that doesn’t exist), with no requirement to validate it.
