On Apple’s developer support page for the app store, the company has posted that 52 percent of iPhones visiting the App Store have iOS 8 installed. The graph also shows that iOS 7 now resides on 43 percent of phones hitting the App Store as of October 27. The last five percent is everything else. At the iPad event, CEO Tim Cook told the audience that 48 percent of iOS devices had installed iOS 8. iOS 8 adoption numbers had seemed to have stalled after the initial launch. Jon Gruber and others believe that has to do with the size of the…

Facebook is on its way to being larger than China

Facebook dropped its third quarter 2014 results today, which includes a mighty impressive monthly active user base of 1.35 billion. That’s the roughly the same population of China the country with the highest population on the planet. To put that in perspective, the combined population of the United States (316.1 million) and Europe (742.5 million), is barely over a billion. Monthly mobile users hit 1.12 billion, an increase of 29 percent over last year. The monthly active users number is an increase of  14 percent over last year. So by this time next year (or sooner), Facebook will be the largest population…

Nike+ Running for iOS updated with HealthKit support… But it might wipe your Health data

Nike today updated its Nike+ Running app for iOS to flesh it out with some new features. They’re small but welcome additions for keeping better track of your runs. Chief among them is Apple Health integration, which lets you source data from wearables, such as heart rate monitor support when using certain devices like Wahoo’s Tickr. The app also now includes a quick start feature to get you tracking your runs with less downtime – just press ‘Begin Run, and you can go immediately. Also included is support for elevation tracking, which Nike says works best with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. You…

A guide to end awkward handshakes

handshake
Mikael Cho is the co-founder of Crew, a network that connects short-term software projects with handpicked developers and designers. This post originally appeared on the Crew blog. The awkward handshake. It happens all the time. From Snoop Dogg and Bill Maher to Yao Ming and his whole family, it seems no one is immune. Even President Obama can’t escape it. Why does something seemingly so simple feel so complex? After all, we’ve all likely been told or heard how important it is to master a good handshake in life: You want to nail that interview? Have a good handshake. You want to show…

Motorola Droid Turbo Hands-on: A Moto X with a huge battery and better camera

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Earlier today, Verizon and Motorola introduced their newest addition to the Droid line-up: the Droid Turbo. We were able to get some time with the device to give you our first impressions. Hardware The Droid Turbo comes in three designs: a red or black ‘metalized glass fiber’, or a black ‘ballistic nylon’. They’re rather aggressive-looking, in typical Droid fashion, but looked better in person than the pre-release press shots. I was able to try out all three devices and was personally partial to the nylon back. The glass fiber options had a pleasant soft-touch feel to them – and the red…
