Honda is promoting its new Civic Type R Concept Car with a nifty interactive video campaign that lets you switch between two complementary videos with a press of the R button. In one storyline of the “double-sided film,” a father picks his kids up from school and takes them to a costume party, while in the other version a getaway driver makes away with a precious artifact from a museum. We can’t embed the full movie(s), but here’s the trailer: I enjoyed switching between the two in real-time, but if you want to lock the player on the night story, you…

SS2_and_VMS_Eve
Spaceflight company Virgin Galactic has lost its Spaceship Two in a crash during a test flight over the Mojave Desert in California. Here’s the statement from the firm: Virgin Galactic’s partner Scaled Composites conducted a powered test flight of SpaceShipTwo earlier today. During the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of the vehicle. Our first concern is the status of the pilots, which is unknown at this time. We will work closely with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident and provide updates as soon as we are able to do so….

From maps to micro-investments, we covered a lot of ground with new Android apps in October. Here we present you with our selection of some of the best newcomers from the past month. HERE Maps Nokia’s HERE maps is one of the four major global online mapping services, alongside Google, TomTom and OpenStreetMap. And it finally launched for Android this month, having previously only been available on Windows Phone (though it was on iPhone for a while too). It’s a really great app, and genuine contender for Google Maps’ crown. Especially given that it sports full offline access for entire…

Good news for Roku users – the Google Play Movies & TV app has landed on its streaming devices and dongles in the US, UK, Ireland and Canada. Google Play Movies & TV is Google’s on-demand streaming service, delivering the latest movies and TV shows, as well as older titles, on a pay-per-title basis. It’s basically Blockbuster in the cloud. The new app can be found in the Roku Channel Store on the latest generation Roku players, with Roku TV support coming “soon.”

(Re-)activate push notifications for The Next Web via Safari

Oct31
by Sindy Cator on October 31, 2014 at 5:05 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Voice

A few months ago we added Safari push notifications for OS X to our site. Since then about 500 new people activate the feature, per day! More than 35,000 people receive notifications every day now. That’s amazing but also easy to understand, as the notifications are subtle but engaging. Unfortunately the upgrade to Mac OS X Yosemite has disabled notifications for some of our users. There’s a simply trick to get them working again though. Open Safari, go to settings and select the Notifications tab. Navigate to the ‘The Next Web’ entry and remove it: Then visit http://thenextweb.com/notifications and you’ll be…
