Ofcom to push ahead with clearing UK Digital TV spectrum for mobile data use

The UK telecom regulator has today announced a decision to push ahead with the repurposing of the 700MHz band of spectrum for mobile data usage. The plan, which has been floated and consulted upon since the beginning of 2014, will see the rehoming of some digital terrestrial television (DTT) and PMSE (Programme Makers and Special Events) to a new band in order to make way for the increasing amount of data traffic being demanded by mobile users. In the long run, Ofcom says using the 700Mhz band will save operators money, which “will bring considerable benefits to citizens and consumers.” However,…

Yesterday Nokia announced it’s dipping its toe back into consumer electronics with the Nokia N1 – a $249 Android-based tablet running its Z Launcher software – now fellow Finns, Jolla, have revealed plans for their own tablet. Unlike Nokia which is launching the N1 the conventional way through a deal with Foxconn, Jolla is crowdfunding the unimaginatively named Jolla Tablet. Huawei says 5G might be available as soon as 2018

Huawei announced today that it has signed an agreement with Russian mobile operator MegaFon to develop and deploy 5G trial networks in time for the 2018 World Cup. The deal between the Chinese telecom company and the Russian mobile service focuses on standardizing 5G technology, determining the requirements to build a 5G network and creating a team to conduct trials and provide coverage at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
