Quotable

"Now that Iceland's volcanic ash has been spewing ash over Europe as long as Noah's flood, and humans have endured this challenge as well or better than in times past, who will author a legend about it for future generations to tell as their biblical testament? Or will it be authored by a billion monkeys on a billion keyboards?" ~ Yasha Harari

At Microsoft’s Windows 10 event, the company unveiled a new VR experience for the platform, calling it the “next step” of computing. Windows Holographic is a headset you wear that makes holograms appear in real life; so it’s more of an augmented reality device. The company showed a demo video, with potential applications of the headset and promised it would be available for press demos after the event today. The device itself, named HoloLens, uses see-through lenses, spatial sound, advanced sensors, a holographic processing unit and can work entirely untethered. Wired went hands on with the device earlier in the week…

It seems the day many people have been waiting for is finally here – WhatsApp is now available on your desktop, but only if you’re an Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry user. The new Web client is actually a simple mirror from the WhatsApp app on your phone, so in order to use it, you’ll need to have an active connection on your phone, not just your computer. To start, you’ll need to scan a QR code and have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your phone. You’ll also need to be using the Chrome browser on the desktop. WhatsApp…

At its Windows 10 event today, Microsoft unveiled a new display that integrates Windows 10 to help groups work better together. The display is a 84″ 4K display with integrated computer. It supports multi-touch and multi-pen to help groups work together, like in business situations. The company showed off one-touch meetings, which will be particularly useful for businesses. When a meeting is scheduled in a room, you can tap the screen to jump into a video call with the participants.  At the end of your meeting, you can tap a button to “clear it” for the next meeting, which resets…

Twitter digits
At Twitter Flight in October, the company introduced an intriguing way for developers to offer logins via a phone number called Digits. Already available for Android and iOS apps, today the social network announced that it released Digits for the Web. Launched today, the Digits SDK gives developers to the ability to tie an app’s companion site into the SMS-based login system. Users would still set up their accounts on an iOS or Android app, but when they went to that app’s site, they could login with the same phone number they used for the app. Plus, if a user uses…
