RadioShack officially files for bankruptcy, holds on to life with Sprint agreement

RadioShack today hit a new, though expected, low point as it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Part of the move involves the company selling off up to 2,400 or so retail venues to Standard General (its largest shareholder). RadioShack is still holding on for dear life, however; the bankruptcy plan includes an agreement with Sprint to co-brand approximately 1,750 of the purchased venues through a “store-in-store” model. The new model, if finalized and approved, means that RadioShack will exclusively sell Sprint mobile devices and services (including Boost and Virgin Mobile). It also means that Sprint branding and products will occupy approximately a third of the retail space per…

Twitter is constantly moving. That’s part of the allure of the social network. But sometimes you want to dig up a tweet you saw and of course you go to the place where you search for everything: Google. Today, Twitter announced that it was giving Google access to its firehose of data in order to make finding all those tweets. First reported by Bloomberg yesterday, tweets will start showing up in Google search results as soon as they are posted to the social network. During today’s Q4 2014 earnings call, CEO Dick Costolo confirmed the deal, but wouldn’t share any details. He…

Finding that old post you once saw on Tumblr can be difficult if you don’t remember when it was published. You’ll have a bit of an easier time now – the platform has been updated with a search filter to show you only certain types of entries. Whereas you used to only be able to find posts on a user’s archive by their published month, you can now filter them by type: text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio or video. To access the feature, you hover over a user’s avatar and select “Archive” from the dropdown menu. Once there, you’ll see the sorting…

Apple has let loose details of its brand new Photos app — the expected replacement for both iPhoto and Aperture. Today, the new app was bundled into a beta version of OS X 10.10.3, which Apple made available to its developers. Overall, the look is simple and uncluttered, borrowing from the iOS Photos app, the desktop iPhoto and Aperture. Heavily integrated with the iCloud Photo Library and completely re-engineered, the new Photos app is designed to let you access any photo in your collection at any time and from anywhere. An Optimize Mac Storage option facilitates storage of full resolution photos…
