gchq_building_1_full
GCHQ, the UK intelligence agency, unlawfully accessed millions of personal communications collected by the NSA, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has ruled today. The Tribunal is the only UK court with the power to oversee GCHQ, Mi5 and Mi6. This is the first time it has ever ruled against one of the intelligence and security services. The court found that the intelligence sharing between the US and UK agencies prior to December 2014 was unlawful because the rules governing UK access to the NSA’s PRISM and UPSTREAM programmes were secret. The existence of both programmes was not known until the…

yourstory_FacebookLite_InsideArticle-1
After years of relative inactivity in Africa, January marked the month when Facebook really started ramping up its activities on the continent. From Africa-focused solutions to talk of a physical office, it seems like the international giant has finally begun to take Africa seriously. Facebook means business in Africa There were signs last year Facebook was increasingly looking at Africa, with the launch of the Internet.org app in Zambia and Kenya, but the social network has really ramped up its activity in 2015. Firstly, the company launched Facebook Lite in a handful of African and Asian markets, a simplified version…

DJI Drone
DJI has asked users of its Phantom 2 range of drones to roll back a firmware update to an earlier version owing to “a small number of reported issues” with the software. The company’s recent software updates added safety features including GPS-based geofencing to prevent the drones from flying into sensitive and restricted areas like airports, the White House and national borders in the US. DJI Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision and Phantom 2 Vision + owners are being urged to roll back their drone firmware from version 3.10 to version 3.08 to avoid issues while operating their drones. Phantom 2 owners…

LinkedIn’s usually about finding your next paid gig but it’s just unveiled a new set of features to connect professionals who want to volunteer with UK charities that need their help. The LinkedIn Volunteer Marketplace will put charitable organizations in touch with LinkedIn members who’ve expressed an interest in volunteering. Meanwhile users will be able to browse thousands of volunteering opportunities at non-profits. To indicate you’re interested in volunteering or serving on a board, you just have to check the box on your profile under the ‘Volunteer Experience and Causes’ section. LinkedIn introduced the Volunteer Marketplace in the US last…

Google EU 2

An advisory council, formed by Google, has backed its decision to apply Europe’s ‘right to be forgotten’ ruling only in the European Union. Regulators had previously called on the company to apply the rule globally. Google put together the eight-person committee in May last year to advise it on implementing the EU court decision. It’s comprised of academics and thinkers including Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. They say they weren’t paid beyond expenses and have signed no contractual or non-disclosure agreements with the company. The original ‘right to be forgotten’ ruling instructed search engines to remove personal information unless it’s judged to…
