Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 OS adds style and function to Android

Mi 4 header
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi launched its 2014 flagship, the Mi 4, in India last week, and the device is set to on sale on Tuesday in the country for about $325. While the phone isn’t exactly new, it does come with the latest version of MIUI, the company’s own flavor of Android. The Mi 4 is Xiaomi’s first device to get the update in English. MIUI 6 isn’t just for the Mi 4 though; it will soon show up on other Xiaomi devices through 2015. We did a hands-on test of the Mi 4 last year, so this time around we’re looking…

The first Ubuntu smartphone goes on sale in Europe next week for just under €170

UbuntuPhone
It’s been a long road since the project was announced, but the first Ubuntu-based smartphone will go on sale for just under €170 (around $195) in a flash sale across Europe. Ubuntu actually announced BQ as one of the launch partners in February last year, but it seems the project delivery date slipped a bit into 2015, nonetheless, the terribly named BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition is finally nearly here. The exact date, time and URL of the online-only sale will be revealed via the BQ and Ubuntu Twitter and Facebook accounts, which is no doubt a good way to drive a following to those social…

Switching Aggregates in Pivot Fields

Feb06
by Sindy Cator on February 6, 2015 at 12:30 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Keyboard, PivotTables

We’ve all been there. You create a pivot table, add your Values fields, and Excel thinks you want to Count them instead of Sum them just because you have a few blanks.

To fix it, you can click the yellow Count of Labor (for example), choose Value Field Settings, and change the aggregate. Or you can right click on any field and choose Summarize Values By and switch it to Sum. Both good options, but not good enough. I assigned Ctrl+Shft+A to this happy little customer and I’m toggling aggregates like crazy.

Sub SwitchAggregate()

    Dim pf As PivotField

    ‘Make sure the activecell is in a pivot field
    On Error Resume Next
        Set pf = ActiveCell.PivotField
    On Error GoTo 0

    If Not pf Is Nothing Then
        ‘Toggle between sum and count
        If pf.Function = xlSum Then
            pf.Function = xlCount
        Else
            pf.Function = xlSum
        End If
    End If

End Sub

There’s probably a bug or two, but so far so good.

Manchester City launches the Premier League’s first Android Wear app

Feb06
by Sindy Cator on February 6, 2015 at 12:03 pm
Posted In: android wear, Apps, Around the Web, Gadgets, Manchester City, premier league

We reported last year on Manchester City’s feature-packed Matchday app for iOS and Android. Now the Premier League champions have become the first club to bring that data to Android Wear.  The CityMatchday Wear app will make its debut during tomorrow’s game against Hull City. It’ll notify users about key moments including team sheet announcements, goal alerts, penalties and red cards, as well as other commentary. Perhaps conscious that there may not be many Man City fans with an Android watch strapped to their wrist just yet, the club has given away four to members of its fans association. ➤ CityMatchday Wear [Google Play]…

UK spy agency GCHQ unlawfully shared NSA internet surveillance data, rules court

gchq_building_1_full
GCHQ, the UK intelligence agency, unlawfully accessed millions of personal communications collected by the NSA, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has ruled today. The Tribunal is the only UK court with the power to oversee GCHQ, Mi5 and Mi6. This is the first time it has ever ruled against one of the intelligence and security services. The court found that the intelligence sharing between the US and UK agencies prior to December 2014 was unlawful because the rules governing UK access to the NSA’s PRISM and UPSTREAM programmes were secret. The existence of both programmes was not known until the…
