Kaspersky Lab reveals spyware on the world’s most popular hard drives, suspects the NSA

The security researchers at Kaspersky Lab have revealed that an agency – most likely the NSA – has developed spyware that can be hidden on hard drives. The software has been found to work with hardware made by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, IBM, Micron Technology and Samsung, and could provide a means to conduct surveillance “on the majority of the world’s computers.” Kaspersky reports that it has found a series of different backdoors, according to Reuters. It has detected variants of the software on machines in over 30 countries, including Iran, Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China. Targets included government and military institutions, telecom…

iZettle launches its first free entry-level Chip & PIN card reader

Taking mobile payments if you’re a truly independent retailer can be a bit of a laborious process, and while the likes of Square, Payleven and iZettle have eased that pain somewhat, there’s still a financial outlay required if you want to take Chip and PIN payments using a card reader. Today, however, iZettle has unveiled its ‘Lite’ card reader, which is available to businesses in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. SmartEyeglass Developer Edition
As Google begins working on a commercial version of its heads-up display wearable, Sony is stepping things up in double time, with the launch of its SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 augmented reality glasses. The device will be available in 10 countries this March, and pre-orders have already opened in the UK and Germany at $840 apiece. The bulky looking binocular display eyewear weighs about 2.7 oz (77g) and manages to superimpose monochrome text, symbols and images in your field of vision. This developer edition comes with a controller that features a speaker, mic, NFC and touch sensor for controlling the display.…

Google’s Android One program, which aims to bring the latest version of Android on low-cost, yet capable devices, has reached the Philippines. Two smartphones  — the Cherry One and the MyPhone Uno — will go on sale in a few weeks with Android Lollipop on board, as well as dual SIM support and a MicroSD card slot for additional storage.
