Twitter backs the FCC’s net neutrality plans

Twitter has published a blog post in support of FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s net neutrality proposal, which is set to be approved on Thursday. The statement, penned by the company’s public policy manager, Will Carty (@WRDCarty) says: “We need clear, legally sustainable rules to ensure that the internet remains open and continues to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers. This is the heart of Twitter. Without such net neutrality principles in place, some of todays most successful and widely known internet companies might never have come into existence.” Twitter previously lobbied for the proposals…

It was rumored for a while, but now it’s official. Google has launched YouTube Kids. The company says it’s been working with various teams across Google (and many parents) over the past year to make it easier for children and parents to interact, resulting in the refined YouTube app for family-focused content. The new app is designed to be simpler for children featuring a brighter and bigger interface. Facebook’s privacy policy breaches European law, says watchdog

Facebook’s privacy policy violates European law, according to a study commissioned by the Belgian privacy commission, and released today, The Guardian reports. Conducted by the Centre of Interdisciplinary Law and ICT at the University of Leuven, the report says the social network’s updated policies, which came into effect last month, only expanded previous policy and practices, and violate European consumer protection law. The authors argue that Facebook’s policies on profiling for third-party advertising do not “meet the requirements for legally valid consent” and that it “fails to offer adequate control mechanisms” to prevent user-generated content being used for commercial purposes.
