The Russians may have lost the Cold War, but one thing that will never die is the art that talented illustrators created during the era that spanned roughly 1917 to 1985 — from the overthrow of the monarchy through the emergence of glasnost and perestroika. Bold graphic design from the 20th century Communist era was often used as a call for action with a targeted political agenda — whether it was to join the Militia army, warn against the dangers of alcoholism and the Nazis or celebrate International Workers’ Day. Militia Army — Army of Workers, Kochergin N. M. (1920) The New Savings Regime Does Not Mean Clamping Down on the Economy…

A report today on Bloomberg Business detailed Radioshack’s plans to sell off its name separately from its assets, with a $20 million opening bid. As part of the sell-off, Radioshack will put up for sale its trademarks and other intellectual property. The opportunity to purchase the RadioShack name was announced today in bankruptcy court. With the name being sold off separately, it’s possible we might see the brand reborn as something else in the future. If you’ve always wanted to own the Radioshack name, all you’ll need to do is dig deep for a few million and it could be yours. ➤RadioShack…

Buzzfeed is going all in with experimental apps. After acquiring GoPop last week, its launching its first experimental app. As expected, it’s so full of cute animals, your heart may burst. Available today, the Cute or Not app for iOS is a mix of the old Hot or Not site and Tinder. You’re presented with a cat or dog and you swipe right if it’s cute and left if it’s not. I mean come on, you’re going to be swiping right about 95 percent of the time. You’ll also probably be swiping right all day, because who doesn’t like to look…

Lenovo’s website was hacked and it’s kind of perfect

Lenovo
Lizard Squad has allegedly taken over Lenovo’s website right now, posting what seems to be a slideshow of pictures of the hackers dressed up, set to “Breaking Free” from High School Musical. It’s kind of perfect, even though it’s terrible. The attack may be in retaliation to the news breaking that Lenovo was loading malicious software onto consumer PCs. When the slideshow is clicked, it redirects to Lizard Squad’s Twitter account. Viewing the source of the site reveals a note that says “the new and improved rebranded Lenovo website featuring Ryan King and Rory Andrew Godfrey.” Ryan King and Rory Andrew Godfrey have been previously identified as…

Hop, the app that turns email into quick messages has landed on Android

Hop, the email app that tries to make sending emails like using IM, has landed on Android today. The idea behind Hop is that instead of sending long, cumbersome emails, you can quickly jump in and out of message threads and treat them like it’s like a quick chat service instead. Over the last few months, the team has been busy adding new features like groups, personalized notifications, attachments via Dropbox and more. Today’s launch is good news for Android users that want to try something different; Hop was previously only available on iPhone and iPad. ➤ Hop [Android]
