After voting in favor of regulating broadband services as a public utility, Tom Wheeler, Chairman at the Federal Communications Commission says that as the most powerful and pervasive platform on the planet, the internet “cannot exist without a referee.” Speaking about his first year in office, Wheeler said “Obama and I are long time supporters of net neutrality, it has been an ongoing process that culminated last Thursday.” The vote last Thursday was a narrow win in favour of Wheeler’s net neutrality guidelines which he says are built on the regulatory model that has been widely successful in the US for…

Ford has unveiled two concept electric bikes at Mobile World Congress that aim to make riding around the city streets a little safer. The two e-bikes, called MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro, have a 200-watt electric motor and 9-amp-hour battery that can speed the rider along at speeds of up to 25km/h. So far, so electric bike. However, Ford’s e-bikes also feature a rear-facing sensor that alerts the rider if a car is approaching quickly from behind to allow them to take evasive action if necessary. It does this by making the handlebars vibrate, so no visual cue is required, although if you…

Clearbit, a startup that provides a number of business intelligence APIs, is today launching to provide powerful company and person information for developers. The idea is simple: send Clearbit an email address or company URL via an API call and you’ll get back a bunch of useful information on the person or company you’ve queried. Clearbit indexes public information on companies and people so its customers can programatically get info quickly and reliably about them in a flash. It also provides APIs for quick OFAC compliance checks on names and address validity checks. For example, a quick API call for uber.com would return…

BitTorrent Sync 2.0 is now publicly available

New Sync Logo
BitTorrent today announced that version 2.0 of its Sync platform for P2P file sharing is shedding the beta tag and becoming available to the general public. A quick recap if you’re not familiar: Sync is BitTorrent’s take on sharing files through the cloud, except files aren’t kept on the cloud at all. Instead, users share files using similar protocols to torrents you might use online. This means files aren’t held in an obscure server somewhere hundreds of miles away from you, and are instead shared directly between clients through the quickest means possible – it could be your local network if…

Austin’s annual jamboree of film, music and startup culture, SXSW kicks off in 10 days and the festival has just launched its official app, which relies heavily on Apple’s iBeacon technology.  SXSW Go (available on iOS and Android) will hook into over 1,000 beacons placed around the event’s official venues with an opt-in feature called Around Me. When an attendee checks in with the app, the beacons will let them know what’s happening nearby and who else has arrived recently. The idea is make to networking at the massive event that little bit easier. The SXSW Go app was developed…
