User onboarding isn’t a feature

onboarding2
This article originally appeared on HelpScout. I’ve spoken to many companies about their onboarding experiences, and I often hear them enthusiastically tell me that they finally got onboarding on their roadmap and plan to roll it out soon. I cringe a bit when I hear this. Weird, right? For someone who is way into user onboarding, wouldn’t hearing that there’s more of it coming out be music to my ears? It’s not, unfortunately, because it’s a huge indication that the company is approaching onboarding the wrong way. User onboarding isn’t a feature of your product like a new dashboard or…

Why a picture of a vagina could force Facebook to fight lawsuits outside California

Facebook could soon have to fight a lot more lawsuits outside its native California. The high court in Paris ruled this week that it had jurisdiction in a case involving a French teacher who has his Facebook account suspended after posting a 19th century painting of a woman’s vagina, AFP reports. ‘L’Origine du Monde’ – ‘The Origin of the World’ – by Gustave Courbet, is part of the collection at Paris’s Musée d’Orsay. The French court ruled that it is abusive for Facebook’s terms and conditions to require that legal complaints against it only be filed in California. The teacher, whose…

Behind the scenes: How TNW Index got featured on Product Hunt

TNW Index
It was just another Monday, or so it seemed. I was in Barcelona at 4YFN to do the opening keynote about the future of media companies and their new business models. Meanwhile, the TNW team was getting ready for a pre-launch of our new tool Index. Index has been in closed beta for the past two months. We’d had the time to test it and improve it with a very small group of engaged users (thanks for all the feedback!). The service was getting good enough to allow more people in and, as Ryan Hoover from Product Hunt reached out to…

UK police claim 50% of the country’s phishing attacks come from 60 compromised businesses

The UK’s National Crime Agency says just 60 businesses with compromised servers could account for 50 percent of the phishing attacks originating from the country each month. As part of a huge operation to arrest cybercrime suspects across the UK, which the agency called a “strike week”, 10 Regional Organised Crime Units, Police Scotland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland visited 60 companies and identified 5,531 compromises on servers. Those affected servers can be used to send out spam email, launch attacks against websites or perpetrate phishing scams. The week of action by the NCA has resulted in the…

Facebook, Google, Apple and hundreds of big companies come together to support marriage equality

Mar06

379 of the biggest companies in the world, including Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google have teamed up to file a brief in the US Supreme Court in support of marriage equality. The brief was filed yesterday by the Morgan Lewis law firm; it makes a business case to legalize same-sex marriage in the US. The brief states that the current legal standing on same-sex marriage is a burden on employers and employees and makes it “increasingly hard to conduct business.” The justices will hear arguments for the case in April and a ruling will follow at a later date. ➤ Brief…
