onlinesecurity

This post is part of a new series titled, ‘Future of Communications,’ and is brought to you by Nexmo.

As more Internet users become mobile-first, security plays a larger role in the apps and services used in our daily lives. From a business perspective, a company puts its reputation at risk if it is perceived to be lax about verifying user identity. Consequently, ensuring the legitimacy of users has become a critical exercise for businesses, especially community-based ones. Another motive for increasing application security is the cost to the business after suffering data breaches. If the company can identify where the breach started and pin it down to a user, this may potentially allow for a more effective containment of…

typography
Charlotte Demonque is the community manager at Fontyou, a Paris-based online co-creation platform dedicated to typography. This post originally appeared on the Fontyou blog, and has been adapted with permission. Typography, like school friends, has its own language. Talking about kerning with your best typelover can be cool. But if you haven’t learned to speak Typographish in school, a type conversation can easily become mumbo jumbo. Keep calm, we will answer everyday questions in this article, such as “what is kerning, mother fonter?”. We will also discuss other words ending with “ing”, trying our best to make you understand their meanings. GLYPH…

YouTube introduces interactive cards to complement annotations – and they work on mobile too

YouTube annotations – often useful uploader addendums, other times annoying distractions. Today though, the video platform is announcing a new and improved tool: cards. Cards are like interactive annotations that allow creators to add outside links and images in addition to information. Like annotations, they can be set to pop up at any time. The most important change however, is perhaps that they finally make in-video notes from the uploader viewable on mobile devices. There are currently six card types covering merchandise, fundraising, video links, playlist links, associated websites and fan funding. Uploaders will see a new “Cards” tab in the video editor where they can…

Lookback, the app testing feedback recording service for iOS devices, has acquired QuickCast, a company that makes a screen recording app for OS X. It’s also released new tools to record beta tester feedback on Android devices and Mac desktops. QuickCast has been updated and renamed Lookback for Mac. It lets users record their screen, face and voice as they use apps and browse sites on their desktops, in order to deliver app testing feedback and bug reports to developers. The tool is compatible with Safari and Chrome, and uploads recordings automatically to Lookback’s site for companies to view and…

Dyson, a UK company better known for vacuum cleaners than phone batteries, has announced today that it is investing $15 million in a project to create a new battery that aims to double smartphone battery life. The project is being headed by Sakit3 – an innovative battery company that is an off-shoot from the University of Michigan. The new lithium-ion batteries are being developed with solid-state technology so they could store twice as much energy as the batteries typically used in smartphones today. Sakit3 has said this approach is safer and more cost efficient for manufacturers as well. Battery life is…
