Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Temperatures in the city where I live, Delhi, can be really extreme. In summer, the mercury rises above 45-degrees Celcius. and in winter, it drops to below 5-degrees Celcius. Plus, most homes here lack central temperature control systems. So, we have to rely on fans, ACs, and portable heaters. So, when I found out that Dyson‘s refurbished HP01 Pure Hot + Cool Desk Purifier is selling for just $169.99 – down from $449 – I jumped with joy.  This device has an elegant design. It sits…

Facebook has shut down more than 30 accounts that were found to be spreading Remote Access Trojans (RATs) through malicious links that claimed to inform users about the ongoing political crisis in Libya. Dubbed ‘Operation Tripoli,’ the large-scale campaign — uncovered by cybersecurity vendor Check Point Research — found that these pages have been a malware distribution point at least since 2014, potentially infecting thousands of victims. According to researchers, the accounts — some with over 100,000 followers — lured unsuspecting victims into “clicking links and downloading files that are supposed to inform about the latest airstrike in the country,…

There’s an urban legend that finds Ernest Hemingway at a restaurant with his friends. He spoke up and bet everyone around the table that he could write a story in only six words, they accepted. AI models are wonderful and weird. Some of them can create videos from just one image, and some can stop your cat from getting inside a house with prey in its mouth. But we have to admit, these models don’t have sassy names. So, research scientist Janelle Shane has developed a neural network that names things. In the past, it has named cats and effect pedals of on the guitar. Some of the names of cats from the project: Give Me A Reason, Monocle, and Oilbag; effect pedals were named Dangerous But Not Unbearably So, Love and Sex Are A Mercy Clause, and Am I really that…
