Quotable

"How many productive working hours are wasted by viewers watching worldwide championship sports events? How many Millions of Dutch and Spanish people will skip work to watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final? Although in Europe's case, they don't work much anyway, so what difference does it really make?" ~ Yasha Harari

At the end of the massive SXSW interactive conference in Austin, we caught up with Dave Lippman, eBay’s vice president of design and executive creative director to chat about how he is working to transform eBay into a universal and personalized e-commerce platform. “We have the world’s stuff, but it’s not like the yard sale or auction everyone has in their mind,” Lippman told TNW. The new eBay strives for personalization and seeks to establish an emotional connection with users. And, of course, there’s a primary concentration on mobile platforms now, with the e-commerce site’s new iPad app. Regardless of where, how and for what…

Somehow, over the last 24 hours, I have become the world’s leading expert on toilet paper orientation. Allow me to explain. The beginning It all started when I found this patent on Google Patents and made a tweet about it: The patent for toilet paper should settle the over vs under debate pic.twitter.com/arZl6l6ALn — Owen Williams (@ow) March 17, 2015 A bunch of us argued about which way was the true way for a while — some people seem to think it should face the wall to stop your cat from pulling it all down — but I quickly discovered people are quite…

Medium for iOS now lets you write and publish directly from the app

Medium for iOS today gets a much-needed update to allow users to write and publish drafts on the go. The app even allows you to write a post using voice dictation if you’re feeling too poetic to type. All the basic features of a typical Medium post are there: title, subtitle, quote formatting, photo uploads. The only caveat is that you can only write one draft on the mobile app at a time, with the post saved locally. Only after you publish or delete the draft, you can start anew. At this time the update does not allow draft sharing, syncing or editing,…

Amazon can now legally fly its experimental delivery drones during daytime

A big hurdle has been overcome by Amazon today for a future where everything’s delivered by drones; the FAA has granted the company an experimental airworthiness certificate for its delivery drones. The company is allowed to use the drones during daylight, below 400 feets in “visual meteorological conditions” which boils down to a clear day. It also requires Amazon to have pilots with visual line-of-sight with the drones. Under the experimental certificate, Amazon is required to provide monthly flight data to the FAA such as number of flights, pilot duty time, hardware/software malfunctions, deviations from air traffic controllers’ instructions and any…

Magic Leap shows off its augmented reality gaming experience

Magic Leap, the mysterious virtual reality company funded by Google, has today released a first look at its AR games experience with its headset.  The video, which was created in collaboration with Weta workshop (the studio behind movies like Lord of The Rings) supposedly shows a game where the user can interact with real-world and virtual objects and impressive graphics. Considering the collaboration is with Weta, it’s likely the video is mostly just a simulation, but it’s still a cool look at what could be our augmented reality future, where you run around your office like an insane person. ➤ Just another day in…
