Review: Penn & Teller’s VR experience is hilarious, magical, and decidedly cruel

Gearbox today launched Penn & Teller VR: Frankly Unfair, Unkind, Unnecessary, & Underhanded. Anyone who remembers the old boxed magician‘s tool-kits from yesteryear (amaze and astound your friends!) will feel right at home with this hilariously cruel VR experience. P&T: VR isn’t a game so much as it’s a performance aid, tool for pranksters, or gateway drug for budding magicians. It contains a series of gags you can pull on unsuspecting victims. Basically you’ll watch a “backstage” tutorial for each bit, given by Penn & Teller themselves, that explains how the tricks work. They teach you the setup, explain what…

Neuroscientists scanned radicals’ brains to determine what makes them turn violent

The young man sitting in the waiting room of our neuroimaging facility wearing skinny jeans and trainers looked like a typical Spanish 20-year-old of Moroccan origin. Yassine* was bouncy, chatting up the research assistants, and generally in good spirits. He was like so many other Barcelona youths, except he openly expressed a desire to engage in violence for jihadist causes. As we took him through a battery of tests and questionnaires, we were barely able to keep him in his seat as he kept proclaiming his willingness to travel to Syria to kill himself. “I would go tomorrow, I would…

Two-thirds of failed stablecoin projects were backed by gold

Stablecoins were once touted by some as a fix for cryptocurrency’s volatility. Thing is, it seems they’re not as stable as their name would suggest. Most of the stablecoin projects announced since 2017 are still yet to launch, and two-thirds of stablecoin projects that have failed were backed by gold. Since the beginning of 2017, 119 stablecoin projects have been announced and are still yet to be rolled out to the public, there are currently 66 active stablecoins, according to research from blockchain analytcis firm Blockdata. To date, 24 stablecoin projects have closed down and ceased operations. Around two-thirds (16)…

Firefox’s new tool fools advertisers into thinking you love hip gear

Jun27

It might be annoying for you if an ad follows you everywhere on the internet after you search for a product. Well, the folks at Firefox have developed a new tool that opens 100 tabs in your browser to throw off advertisers. Track This lets you choose from four profiles: Hypebeast, Filthy Rich, Doomsday, or Influencer. Once you choose a profile, click on ‘Track This,’ and the tool will open 100 tabs on your browser. For example, when I chose the ‘Filthy Rich’ profile, the tool opened up websites related to properties, luxury credit cards, and trading. The idea behind…

Why Mormonism is the best religion for cyborgs

Jun27

Posted In: Around the Web

It feels like we’re finally getting to the magical stage where technology is catching up with our imagination — which of course only means one thing: cyborgs! This might still sound futuristic, but they’re actually already walking among us, and many more of us could become cyborgs in the coming years, if plans by people like Elon Musk pan out. It’s going to take a while to adjust to this coming reality, both practically (in terms of legislation) and ideologically (we’re all familiar with dystopian depictions of half-human, half-machine abominations). There is one area, however, that’ll probably be particularly difficult…
