Silicon Valley is the biggest loser from Trump’s war with Huawei

Huawei has had a rollercoaster month. First, the company was placed on an entity list, prohibiting US companies from doing business with it. Then, this weekend, Donald Trump eventually reversed course in a face-to-face meeting with Chinese premier Xi Jinping at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan. This is excellent turn of events for Huawei. Just a few weeks ago, it faced oblivion. The embargo was an existential threat for the company, preventing it from sourcing chipsets, mobile modems, and even the underlying ARM instruction sets used by its HiSilicon Kirin processors. Now, it’s able to resume as it previously…

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! If there’s one downside to using smart speakers, it’s the lack of a screen. As useful as it is to vocally give commands to something, humans are innately visual creatures, and there’s a lot of information we process better in that way. Considering choosing music for example. If you know exactly what, using your voice is fine. But if you want to browse? Having a screen makes this process so much simpler. This is why every smart home needs a hub with a screen…

Dutch ministers want to regulate cryptocurrencies as part of a wider effort to tackle money laundering in the country. According to a note sent to parliament on Monday, Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra and Ferdinand Grapperhaus, Minister of Justice and Security, want to limit the risks associated with cryptocurrencies and make the Netherlands a leader in the fight against money laundering. “Crime cannot pay. Not in the Netherlands, not in Europe, and not globally. This makes it possible for criminals to stay out of the reach of the government and to enjoy those proceeds undisturbed. These illegal proceeds can also…

The bigger they are, the harder they fall — WeWork and Uber’s fight against reality

Jul01
by Sindy Cator on July 1, 2019 at 9:36 am

We now know that Uber is worth one of two amounts: precisely $68.95bn or absolutely anything. Never before has a company both been a worthless empty assetless cathedral to hope over unit economics and an invaluable first mover stake in the future of all human mobility.   San Francisco is a city built on hope against all odds and it shows. A place where anything that seems to struggle to make profit is immediately validated by the exceptional nature of Amazon. Where any company that’s making a profit is seen to show a lack of ambition or imagination. A city with…
