So, what’s up with that Reddit button that’s driving the internet bonkers?

On April Fools’ Day this year, many tech companies came out with their own pranks and easter eggs, from Google Pac-Maps to Imgur’s GIF collaboration experiment. Reddit didn’t show off anything extravagant: Just a locked blue button with a 60-second timer next to it. r/thebutton has since been driving Redditors nuts. You’re only allowed to push the button once, but there’s no telling what happens after you push it. As it turns out, nothing happens exactly. The Button is simply a social experiment on human curiosity and patience. The 60-second countdown clock measures how long an entire community of Redditors are able to wait until…

apple watch display
Like most normal human beings in the world, I hate lines. I hate waking up too early to wait in one, standing around not knowing when the queue will budge, or that if I leave, it will suddenly move forward. So when Apple launched its Apple Watch in-store demo stations this morning, the idea of trekking to the Apple Store made me roll my eyes so far back, I saw last night’s hopes and dreams. Instead, I tagged team with a random guy off the internet who was willing to enter into the tech abyss to send me photos of Apple’s shiny new gadget. For…

Why SEO is sabotaging your content marketing

SEO
John Rampton is the founder of Palo Alto, California-based Host, a hosting company specializing in helping businesses with hosting their website for free, for life. Connect with him @johnrampton. Your SEO and content marketing strategies have the potential to work beautifully together. In fact, I’d argue you can no longer successfully pull one off without the other. But a problem arises when your SEO strategies actually start hurting your content marketing efforts. It’s not just about using outdated or ineffective SEO strategies either, although this is certainly one of the major culprits. It’s also about not allowing one strategy to work with and inform the other. Fortunately,…

Amazon’s newest delivery drone prototype has approval for testing in the US

Apr10
by Sindy Cator on April 10, 2015 at 2:55 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Remember those crazy delivery drones Amazon was touting? Well, the company hasn’t given up on them. Tthe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) yesterday gave Amazon the green light to test its drones.  According to the approval document, Amazon has to keep the drones at 400 feet or lower, and they can travel at no faster than 100 miles per hour. The FAA had originally granted Amazon permission for an earlier drone prototype, but it took the FAA so long to approve it that Amazon decided to retire the model for being obsolete. This time around the FAA approved the new model…

Locking the Web open: Why we need to rethink the World Wide Web

This article is part of a series written by speakers featuring at our upcoming 10th anniversary TNW Conference Europe. Brewster Kahle is the founder of the Internet Archive, one of the largest digital libraries in the world, home to the Wayback Machine and 20 petabytes of our shared cultural history. One of my heroes, Larry Lessig, famously wrote that “Code is Law.” In other words, the way we code the Web will determine the way we live online, so we need to bake our values into our code. Freedom of expression, privacy, and universal access to all knowledge should all be baked into…
