Watch now: The world’s most unbelievable startup

“We steal data from your phone and sell it.” That is the value proposition of Vooza, the most unbelievable startup ever. Not only they have great products themselves, they also keep inspiring others and create visionary concepts like ‘radimparency.’ They believe in the power of iteration. In fact, they originally started as StumbleMonkey, which was like Airbnb but for online dating. The idea was that when you leave town, you can rent out your partner. Unfortunately, that turned out to be illegal. So they had to pivot. We’ve just added Matt Ruby’s talk from last year’s TNW Europe Conference to…

Move over Evernote, I use Write for drafting all my articles on Windows now

When I joined The Next Web full-time nearly six months ago, I was looking for ways to streamline my workflow — writing up articles, in particular. I tried out a ton of Windows apps to help me compose posts, but nothing to seemed to fit the bill. I previously used a combination of a little-known notepad replacement called Kewlpad and the popular note-taking super-app Evernote, but they had their drawbacks. The excellent, but now defunct Kewlpad Kewlpad has a tiny footprint, but lacks essential features to help your writing along, such as auto-save and the ability to format text. On…

You just lost The Game: the enduring hold of the pre-Web world’s Rickroll

I went years without losing The Game. Then yesterday, it suddenly popped back into my head and that was it – I’d lost. Long before Rickrolling crawled out of the fetid swamps of 4Chan, The Game was out in the world, frustrating millions. I just lost the game. But really, that's the least of my problems. — Mic Wright. (@brokenbottleboy) April 12, 2015 The central rule is simple – when you think about The Game, you’ve lost. When you lose, you’re obliged to declare it publicly, and once you’ve been introduced to the idea, it’s difficult to let it go. The…

Amazon Fire TV can now identify actors in the movies and shows you’re currently watching

sw-quick-view
Amazon today announced that its X-Ray search feature is coming to the Fire TV. X-Ray for movies and TV allows users to use their Fire TV or Fire TV stick remote to learn more about the actor(s) currently onscreen. By simply asking, “Who’s that actor/actress?” the software will identify the actors’ names and offers an option to learn more about their previous roles. You can also use X-Ray to identify the soundtrack of the show or movie you’re watching. This feature is limited to content on Amazon Instant Video, however, so you won’t be able to ask your Fire TV all your burning questions…

Garmin takes aim at GoPro with new rugged action cameras starting from $299

Garmin might be more closely associated with fitness and outdoors than some brands, but when it comes to rugged, sporting action cameras, the company that probably springs to mind is GoPro. However, Garmin wants to change that with the introduction of its Virb X and Virb XE action cams. With a new, more streamlined form factor and additional mounting options, the company says the devices are now more versatile than ever before. They’re also waterproof up to 50 meters, without the need for any sort of external casing. It added that both have a “plethora of built-in sensors and wireless functionality…
