Halo Spartan Strike
Microsoft isn’t just thinking cross-platform with its apps – it’s opening up its games to other manufacturers too. The company today announced it was bringing two Halo games to iOS. Halo: Spartan Strike is a new game set during the events of Halo 2. It costs $5.99. Spartan Strike is of course also coming to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, but this marks the first time a game in the series has been available on iOS. iOS is also getting a build of Halo: Spartan Assault today, which precedes the new game. Players can get both games together for…

Artists and designers who like to seamlessly switch back and forth between their desktop and tablet can appreciate an app like Astropad, which syncs your Mac’s screen with your iPad so you can work in the app of your choice directly on the touchscreen. Astropad for iPad, launched in February, literally mirrors your Mac desktop via Wi-Fi or USB, letting you sync your iPad’s drawing or painting app directly with your Mac. Astropad works with several popular brands of pressure-sensitive pens for a pro-level drawing experience for illustration, sketching, painting and photo editing. While the app is compatible with a number of tablet pens, Astropad and…

Microsoft is partnering with Cyanogen – which makes the modified Android build Cyanogen OS that runs on devices like the OnePlus One – to make some headway into Google’s territory. The partnership will see several Microsoft apps preloaded onto its OS from later this year – a move clearly aimed at locking Android users into Microsoft’s services, rather than Google’s. Some of the preloaded apps include Bing, Skype, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook, and Office. Microsoft is covering all its bases – each of these apps has a popular Google counterpart. For the tinkerer’s out there, it’s worth noting that Cyanogen OS…

Apple announced a plan to preserve forests and used Medium to do it

Apple’s collaborating with environmental non-profit The Conservation Fund in an effort to protect America’s working forests. That’s a commendable goal, but where it chose to announce it is also interesting – not with a press release on its site, but with a post on Medium. The company has loosened its previously iron grip on the way it communicates with the world in recent years, but it’s still unusual for it to make an announcement through a channel it doesn’t completely control. Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice-president of Environmental Initiatives, and Larry Selzer, President and CEO of the Conservation Fund, used the blogging…

If the excitement around live streaming apps like Meerkat and Periscope has piqued your interest as to the possibilities of new interaction on social media, you might want to check out Chhirp for iOS, which lets you send short voice clips directly to Twitter. Released just a few days ago, the app allows you to record up to 12 seconds of audio and share it straight from your phone. People can then listen to the clip on Chhirp, Twitter or via the Web.
