Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. I love YouTube. I use it to watch videos, play tracks, and listen to podcasts. It has easily become my main source of entertainment. But there is one thing that rubs me the wrong way: YouTube doesn’t let you play videos on your phone in the background (or in lock screen). Fortunately, there is a pretty neat workaround you can use to bypass this restriction – and all you need is Telegram. Here is what you…

The Cowboy e-bike is so good I want to cycle with it off into the sunset

I’m going to get straight to the point: I’ve tested out a few electric bikes in my time, and while I love the VanMoof Electrified 2 series, the Cowboy might be the best. Uh, Cowboy? Yep, it’s a Belgian company that makes electric bikes. The version I tested over the last month or so is the bike’s second iteration, but was still an engineering model. Lord knows how much that cost them.…

Superhuman bills itself as the world’s greatest email client. It should, given how much it costs; users of the app pay $30 a month for a subscription. It justifies that cost by being as feature complete as possible. It includes an array of keyboard shortcuts that expedite the most tedious parts of managing correspondence. And controversially, by default, it sends emails with an included tracking pixel. This allows the sender to see whether the recipient has opened an email. It also shows the time the email was opened, the recipient’s physical location, as well as the quantity of times an…

Here’s how gamification can help your business understand your users

Today’s operations require more comprehensive stores of information, most of which deals expressly in the human behavior of consumers or internal teams. To truly understand a product’s performance, for example, companies must know how many people buy it, how they use it, and what the consensus is—good or bad. Of course, that’s merely a basic illustration, as much more robust stores of data are necessary to inform decisions and events. Unfortunately, the traditional methods for gathering all of this information are costly, time-consuming, disengaging and are often subject to limited pools of participants. As an answer to this problem, many…
