Pinterest has announced details of its developer platform, extending the platform’s core functionality to third-parties. Developers who choose to build new functionality using the APIs will be able to make individual Pins actionable, such as allowing users to order ingredients from a recipe Pin.   The company says developers who integrate Pinterest sign-in will be able to offer users “a personalized, curated experience based on their boards and Pins.” If you’re interested in finding out more you can do so, and apply for access to the closed beta, here. Extending Pinterest’s platform to third-parties is a smart move to strengthen the company’s longer-term prospects: it could drive…

Tech5 Recap: These are Europe’s fastest-growing startups

Tech5
The 2015 edition of Tech5 has officially come to a close. Starting in February, we at The Next Web, working with our partners Adyen, began a hunt for Europe’s fastest-growing young tech startups. In six participating countries we selected the top contenders and invited them to TNW Conference Europe to share their experiences on stage in two panel discussion sessions. Last week we wrapped up this year’s competition by announcing the overall European Tech5 winner at the conference: Fairphone. The social enterprise won the Tech5 event in the Netherlands back in March. The two-year growth rate it boasts puts Fairphone squarely at…

Twitter won’t let you play MS-DOS games embedded in tweets any more, possibly hates all fun

DonkeyKong
The news that you could play MS-DOS games on Twitter simply by embedding a URL from the Internet Archive’s MS-DOS library in a tweet seemed like a fun way to spend a few minutes and relive some of the old classics. Twitter, however, had a different response. Some four days after the news broke, the Guardian now reports that the feature has been disabled for breaching the company’s official Twitter Card rules. Other companies, like Google, embrace easter eggs (like letting you play Pac-Man in Google Maps) and while Twitter’s users do cool things like make Choose Your Own Adventure puzzles, I’m beginning to wonder if Twitter really just hates…

CellAbove trick no longer needed?

May04
by Sindy Cator on May 4, 2015 at 11:42 am
Posted In: Around the Web

I was writing up the CellAbove trick for the book. You know, the trick outlined at Ken Puls’ place.

First I was going to show how SUM doesn’t handle row insertions immediately above the SUM function itself. So I duly made up a crappy example (if you’ll pardon the crappy pun):

Underwear 1

…and then did the screenshot of the row insert, that showed how the formula didn’t adjust:

Underwear 2

…and then went to add some ridiculously large number of underwear, for readers who need some point laboring:

Underwear 3

…and then pushed enter, and to my amazement saw that my example of “broken” ain’t, no more:

Underwear 4

How utterly inconsiderate of Microsoft to fix this. Ruined a perfectly good example that I figure I could have dragged out for another half a chapter. Bugger! Now I have to write something else. God I hope they don’t fix the CONCATENATE function before I finish the book, or I’m screwed.
