The viability of self-driving cars will likely be debated and scoffed at for a long time, but at least we know they’re not distracted by their cellphones. In an article on Backchannel, Google revealed details about how its cars work and some of the mishaps they’ve gotten into. After all, one of the guiding principles behind autonomous vehicles is being able to reduce car accidents, and driver mistakes cause 94% of them in the US, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Google has over twenty cars on the road, which have driven a combined 1.7 million miles in…

Since 2006, Apple has publicly tracked its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, eliminating toxic chemicals from its hardware products, switching to renewable energy for its data centers and much more. Now, Apple is teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund in a multi-year effort to save China’s forests and make that country’s manufacturing facilities greener. Apple today announced that it is expanding its conservation initiatives in China in a effort to protect some 1 million acres of managed working forests that provide fiber for pulp, paper and wood products. It also announced…

Facebook takes on eBay with a new page showing users’ second-hand goods for sale

Facebook is testing out a new option in news feed that shows a unified view of items on sale across user groups and adds the ability to search public groups. We reported earlier this year that the company has begun allowing users that are a part of ‘buy and sell’ groups to attach prices, locations, photos and descriptions to posts about items for sale. Now, it’s taking the tool to the next level. The new ‘all sales groups’ option shows items available for purchase across all groups a user belongs to, providing a unified overview of what’s for sale. It also provides a search engine — which only partially functions…

TweetDeck now helps you avoid embarrassing tweets from the company account

TweetDeck
We’ve all been there. You type up the perfect tweet, only to realize there’s a glaring typo – or worse, you’re tweeting from the wrong account. TweetDeck wants to help you avoid these mistakes by adding an optional confirmation step before you tweet. https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video/CEvoL01UsAAJs86.mp4 Under your account options in the Web app, you’ll see a new toggle to add the extra step. Simply switch it on, and before you tweet, you’ll see a check box asking if you’re ready to tweet before you can actually send your blurb out. It’s a small but welcome addition that will come in handy…

Not to be left behind by Instagram, Facebook is bringing carousel ads to its mobile apps. The company says the ads have been quite successful on the desktop, equating to a 20-to-30 percent lower cost per click than boring old posts with just one image. Some advertisers have seen as much as 75 to 180 percent higher click-throughs. The carousels support up to five images with links (including for app-installs), and are available today through the Facebook Marketing API. ➤ Improving Ad Performance with the Carousel Format
