Google_Maps
The public transportation info found in Google Maps is about to display real-time for San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Budapest, Netherlands and the UK. Google Maps will show you info like whether a bus is running late, or a train is ahead of schedule. To accomplish this, Google has partnered with over 6,000 transit authorities to get a current view of where their vehicles are. For all Maps users, public transit options will now be lumped into groups when you plan a route. If the subway line you wanted to take was behind schedule, Maps now makes it easier to find a different…

A new Dropbox build is toying with Chrome extensions for Mac users, and may add one without you even asking for it. In experimental build 3.7.31, Dropbox accounts that use a Gmail address for logging in will have Dropbox’s Gmail extension loaded automatically. On OS X, if you have Chrome installed we’ll automatically install the Dropbox Gmail extension if you use a Gmail email address with Dropbox. The installation will take effect the next time you launch Chrome. The Dropbox Gmail extension makes it easy to share Dropbox files in an email composed in the Gmail Web client. Zomato shuts down Urbanspoon app, details post-acquisition feature integration

Zomato
Back in January, Zomato acquired Urbanspoon in a move to expand its restaurant recommendation service, leaving the latter’s future somewhat uncertain. Zomato today released some information on how the two services would be integrated. While many features and reviews are being transferred over, because the two services differed on numerous parameters, some adjustments had to be made: Urbanspoon used a like/dislike rating system, whereas Zomato scores locations out of a 5-point scale, so percentage scores from Urbanspoon have been translated for the new system. Zomato only accepts one review per user for each business, so it’s only pulling in a…

twitter
To better support analytics for the scale and activity of its social stream, Twitter has announced Heron. Heron replaces Storm, Twitter’s existing open source platform, but remains compatible with the legacy service via APIs. Like Storm, Heron is tasked with providing real-time analytics for Twitter’s feed. With Heron, Twitter can process billions of events per minute with sub-second latency, and Twitter says it’s up to 15-times faster than Storm. Heron is also designed to withstand activity spikes when popular events occur without bottlenecking. Twitter designed Heron to be easily managed for better developer productivity, and will provide better performance predictability.…
