Quotable

"The network news shows dedicated twenty times more coverage to Tiger Woods' affairs than they did to the Climategate scandal. They figure now that the cat is out of the bag, it's less interesting to nail cagey lying scientists with punchlines than it is to cage the big cat lying down with his club and females. The big bro.ad.cast media can't see the climate change forrest for the Woods." ~ Laughzilla

AppleMaps
Apple has been deploying vehicles in the US to gather images and data for its Maps service and now it’s bringing the programme to the UK and Ireland. The Guardian reports – clearly based on information from a well-placed source – that Apple is about to launch a page on its website detailing the locations the cars will visit in Britain and Ireland. The first mapping expedition begins today (June 9) and will run until June 30. The page which The Guardian refers to maps.apple.com/vehicles was live but not displaying content at the time of writing. The vehicles will be…

A new feature buried in the developer documents for iOS 9 suggests Apple is building in support for ad blocking and privacy apps, with a new API that removes elements from Web views. The new “Content Blocking” feature allows developers to pass a JSON file with a set of rules for images, popups, cookies, resources and other elements in Safari. Content Blocker is live in iOS 9 beta builds right now, with the menu option explaining that “Content Blockers affect what content is loaded while using Safari” but offering no options until an app that adds blocking functionality is deployed. Such a…

Messenger Doodle Draw
Facebook Messenger has finally got a game you can play while chatting. Doodle Draw, a take on Pictionary, is now available through the app. You can find the game in Messenger’s overflow menu, alongside several utility apps. Of course, you’ll need to download it from the App Store or Google Play before you can have a turn.   Doodle Draw is the first game to be launched for Messenger after Facebook opened up the chat service’s API in March. The social network was initially interested only in content creation tools like GIF and meme generators, but it seems like it’s…

User experience is nothing new. We can attribute the recent resurgence most obviously to mobile and tablets (and even wearables), as these have forced us to reconsider design for different screens beyond desktop and laptop. Photo credit: Responsive Design Cheatsheet But like many design disciplines, UX is of course plagued by misconceptions and myth. For instance, many people commonly believe UI to be the same discipline as UX, an inaccuracy that’s further encouraged by all the jobs advertised as UX/UI designer. Add to this that usability is often also used interchangeably and it’s easy to see why the designer who’s…
